VSL and Dorico

Hi,

Does VSL work seamlessly with Dorico?
What about the playing templates, expression maps, percussion maps and playing technique sets?

I ask because I have just seen the following:

Thanks in advance!

three ways to work with VSL:

  1. through NotePerformer Performance Engine which doesn’t support the older Synchron_ized libraries (apart from SE vol1) but takes care of just about everything automatically where it can be used which does include Synchron Prime
  2. through the templates provided by VSL themselves.
  3. by creating your own which is perhaps not what your question is about, though it’s my preferred method!

At any rate, VSL’s programming is generally fairly transparent and reliable and works fine with notation software without needing to jump through hoops.

I think it should be a great library but i would suggest making sure that a dorico playback template exists (i.e someone reliable made one ) for vsl SP

Search VSL playback templates for dorico
E.g.

VSL stuff works great with Dorico! They provide more Dorico support than just about any other manufacturer! Just go into your Vienna Assistant, scroll down to their Dorico Wizard, select the libraries that you own that you want to include in your Playback Template, and the Dorico Wizard will automatically generate the Playback Template. You might want to make your own tweaks of course, but getting your VSL libraries working with Dorico really couldn’t be easier.

The only cautionary is that a few libraries (e.g. synchronized dimension strings & brass) don’t have factory expression maps.

I’ve been happy with Synchron PRIME also, although I have just put in a support request to VSL. Since the new Prime 2.0 with Flow update, my PRIME Orchestra instruments are not available under the “Installed Products Only” tab in the Dorico Wizard. Just my Soft Imperial Piano. According to the Vienna Assistant, PRIME is installed correctly. I can still create templates if I uncheck the ‘Installed Products Only’ tab, but of course, they are blank and nothing loads in Dorico when they are applied. The original, earlier Dorico template for Synchron PRIME seems to be no longer available, and might not work with version 2.0 anyway. I’ll update when I hear back from VSL. Thank goodness for NotePerformer and its NPPE engine for Prime.

Just a follow-up. The VSL folks got back to me quickly and solved the issue I had. For any of you who have Synchron PRIME orchestra and download the updated 2.0 version (or will), it won’t show up as installed when ‘installed instruments’ is checked in the Dorico Wizard (they’re working on that). However, you can still use the Dorico Wizard to create templates. Just uncheck the ‘Installed Insruments’ box. The instrument groups will all appear and can be used to create Dorico playback templates. For DAW composers, the new Flow system might be worth checking out. Alas, I am not one. Happy with Dorico

Well yes, except percussion doesn’t work after the Prime 2.0 update. Something Arne @Noteperformer may have to investigate.

I have only used it so far with the template I created in the Dorico Wizard. Even then, I had to open the Synchron player and double click on Timp, Tubular Bells, Glock, Snare, BD and a couple of other percussion instruments to get them to revert to the ‘original’ mode. They work fine then. There’s no way to do that ‘double-clicking’ trick in NotePerformer that I can see. Hopefully VSL and Arne will fix this soon.

Acccording to Arne from @Noteperformer there is a bug in the Synchron Player and VSL is working on a fix.

Thanks! That’s good to know. I love the way PRIME works with Dorico. Sounds great and doesn’t take near the computer resources of my BBC SO Core Instruments. I can only ‘mix and match’ BBC SO sounds with PRIME or Iconica Sketch due to their resource requirements.
