VST confusion (Iconica Sketch)

I’d consider myself pretty good with engraving and stuff but I’m always struggling with playback sounds; with every new project this is new to me again for some reason, because I can never remember how things are done. So, I’m using the “auto” playback template with uses Iconica Sketch as default sound library and I want a really dry sound for my instruments, as if I was in a small and well-padded rehearsal room. Yet, despite having removed all reverb from the space template, the instruments (specifically the brass instruments) still seem to have some intrinsic reverb. How can I get rid of it?

Iconica does have intrinsic reverb.

So, is there no way to get rid of it and make the instruments sound really dry? Do I have to use a different sound library?

That’s up to you, of course; but if the intrinsic reverb on Iconica bothers you, the answer would be “yes.”

Yes, it bothers me. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: And I don’t quite understand it because it limits you in how you can change the soundscape. You can just add more reverb to an instrument that already has reverb baked in but not make it sound more dry. What’s the point?

I suppose it’s because Iconica Sketch is low-cost or free content.

Have you tried lowering the Release time of the instruments? (not in Dorico at the moment, but I Imagine the VST is the same)

The original Iconica library is (like most of Orchestral Tool’s samples) recorded with the Berlin Teldex Studio ‘baked in’. The full version of Iconica comes with different mic positions so you can mix a close sound.

Spitfire Libraries and OT tend to be “less than dry”. Vienna Instruments is so dry it will make you cough.
