VST Live not importing Cubase media files

Not sure why, but I’ve now started using VST Live (on the assurance from Steinberg that the missing DMX editor tools will be added asap), setting up a template to use for building new songs & even though Cubase (Pro 12) is exporting the media file (in my case, backing track & tempo track) & I can confirm there is data in the created folders of the export, VST Live is not importing the tempo data. The tempo is remaining at 120bpm. Am I missing something here???

… are you using a Tempo Track? Are you sure the tempo track was ticked before exporting the project?

/Michael.

I worked out that it’s easier to import the data & create a new project as you do so. Makes sense, VST Live seems to import all data correctly this way. For some reason, if you already have tracks assigned, VST Live does not import the tempo change data. So I’m just making that first thing I do on each new project.

I now have another issue… how do I manage the transport controls without having to type on the laptop? My laptop is not near me when I perform, it’s on the side of the stage about 5 metres away. Do I have to keep walking over to the laptop to start the next track after I have finished talking to the audience? In Cubase, you can simply assign the controller & then control the transport buttons from the controller, which I have on my microphone stand. I can’t seem to find how to do this in VST Live. Being a solo performer, I don’t have the luxury of anyone else to operate the transport controls. I can’t keep walking off stage to hit play on the laptop every time, surely???

Devices/Actions and Shortcuts, also “Learn” button bottom left.

Got it. Thank you.

Another issue now!
I’m trying to use Kontakt 7 & the Orange Tree Samples Evolution Guitars. For some reason, Kontakt is not changing presets with the new parts. If I change a guitar preset for the new part, that preset remains constant for all the other parts too, it overwrites the previous presets, almost like a ‘global’ setting. I need to change presets from rhythm guitar to lead guitar etc. Also, even though I’m changing midi channels on the layer for the new part, as a workaround to the above problem, using 2 instances of the guitar library on midi channels 1 & 2, Kontakt is only receiving on midi channel 1, like the layer isn’t actually transmitting on midi channel 2. It’s quite frustrating as I use these guitar libraries for most of my songs. Any ideas???

Update… I forgot, I had a script written inside Kontakt that converted program change data into midi channel change data because my keytar (Alesis Vortex Wireless 2) only transmits program change data. I deleted that & now Kontakt is receiving on all midi channels.

Just the last challenge for me now… how do you change VST synth presets in new parts? I’d like to change from a pad sound to a lead sound etc. I’m not using midi tracks, just live playing with my keytar. I can create multiple layers & set each one to receive program change data (1, 2, 3 etc) but if can avoid having to press buttons on my keytar, which is quite awkward, that would be amazing.

Thanks!

If you create a new project, set your prest in the Layer plugin, then duplicate the Part and set to a differnt preset, does it not change preset when switching Parts?

No, it copies the preset over onto the new part. If I then change presets, it also changes the preset of the part that was copied. I found a workaround by creating a new part & adding a stack (default), then choosing which synth I need with the new preset, like it would a new synth.

Thank you.

You may have selected from the “Shared” menu? It will create a new instance unless you selected “copy shared” or “duplicate shared” which is different from just “duplicate” which is the same as you described creating a new Layer (I assume you mean Layer but not Stack, as we’re talking synths here?).

Yes, layers. I’m choosing duplicate. But it creates an exact layer that, if any VST synth presets changes are made, also affect the part that was copied. I had the same issue with Kontakt. I created several parts from duplicating the part before. When I then tried to change a preset in the latest part of the Kontakt library for a guitar solo, all the instances of Kontakt in the parts before were changed too. It seems if you duplicate a part you can’t change presets without affecting ALL parts. You have to create a new part & build its elements from there - new stack & new layer with a ‘new synth’ & the required preset. Same result, just a longer way of doing it.

I tested it and when you create a Part duplicate, it creates a shared duplicate (one can tell by the orange controls). This is a bug, sorry. Only duplicate shared should create it that way.

A workaround is to copy the Layer, create a new Part and paste that Layer, then it is not a shared copy. Will fix asap, thanks for reporting!

Ah, I thought it was me! Ok.

I’m getting into it now & really enjoying the process of creating songs. It’s amazing software, can’t wait for the DMX editor tools.

Fixed with the next version.

Hi musicullum,
Are you aware that the lyrics size in the VST Live Mods IOS app for iPhone does not change size, regardless of what you set it to in VST LIve? At the moment, they’re too big in the iPhone app & I’m trying to make them smaller but not having any luck…

I’ve downloaded the VST Live Mods app for iPad & I’m getting the same problem, the lyrics do not change size. The colour is also default & is not affected by the colour changes set in the actual program. Could you add/update these features for the app at some point please? Many thanks.

Andrew

We are on the case.

Thank you!

Hi @Andy_McKeller,

we are planning to add two new controls to the LYRICS module of the MODS application

  • Font Size
  • Timeline Zooming

Coloring of the events would be next.

See you,
Michael.
