Last night I spent close to three hours working on my plugs in the VSt Plug-In Manager. Today, some of that work is undone. Some of the folder and plugin arrangment is still there, but now some of it is missing. Also, I had checked the “hide” box on a lot of the plugins, especially the ones that I had VST2 copies. None of those plugs are hidden/greyed out today. I wasn’t finished, and now I have to go back and do it all over again. I’ve been buying plugs since ‘98, so there’s quite a bit to go through. What a waste of time.
The date on the templates in the hub are out of sequence. Not a big deal, but wasn’t like this until the recent update.
When I loaded Cubase, just before I made this post, the instruments that I had checked the hide box on in the VST plugin manager were still correct from last night. It was just the effects that had their hide boxes wiped. I restarted Cubase to see if maybe some setting didn’t load correctly, and now the instument list has been wiped of it’s hide settings as well.
I updated to C15.0.10 today and almost all VST and VSTi plugins didn’t show up in Plugin Manager. They were listed in my plugin collection, properly scanned and they worked in the project. Maybe this is somehow related to your problem @Resonant_Serpent.
I solved it by simply renaming the preference folder - the latest profile automatically reinstated all of my most important settings.
However: I have not yet figured out why other more drastic measure were unsuccesful (like restoring the preference folder with a recent backup or even going through a new installation of C15). If I gain any insights that might be useful for your case I’ll get back to you. Still trying to figure it out although it’s all back to normal by now.
It looks as though Profiles are capable of more than the manual tells us. One of my favourite fallback systems in Cubase for years now. Works like a charm, every time. This might be something to look into, too @Resonant_Serpent .
If I may suggest something: Yesterday’s work is probably lost. However, I would try to save a new profile, activate it before shutting down Cubase (it will be active next time you start Cubase), rename the preference folder and relaunch Cubase. Hopefully, your PluginManager will be back to normal.
Of course, everything that is not covered by Profiles must be restored separately.
I restarted Cubase and my hide settings for the VST Instruments returned. But, it appears the hide settings for VST Effects are broken. I can tick the hide box at the bottom of the screen, but the settings don’t stick. If I close the VST Plug-in Manager window, the settings disappear.
I was able to solve the template order issue by resetting the preferences. After that they were normal.
Hi @Resonant_Serpent ,
at least a partial success. Do I understand you correctly - the hide settings don’t stick even after resetting/renaming the preference folder?
As I wrote, they seem to cover more nowadays than they take credit for in the manual. I’m going to look into that over the next days, maybe I’m mistaken.
Profiles reside in a different path than the preference folder - a very clever way to keep most major settings intact in case something gets messed up. Steinberg came up with a really good concept and forgot to take credit for it by promoting it or by providing a detailed documentation… a well-known move..
A FYI in case you missed it: @ASM wrote a really cool script to backup and restore all sorts of settings including profiles
Indeed, they are. They also capture and save configurations and control room presets in Cubase 15, see here. Maybe there’s even more but there’s no update on the manual, as usual. So it all boils down to tribal knowledge once again However, well done Steinberg! Cubase 15 also took care of Control Room presets getting lost, an issue that has been bugging me for many years. Now, they are also saved within the profile as it looks. Good for us - a double safety net.
@Resonant_Serpent Have you tried to temporarily rename your preference folder?
Sorry for the delay in response. We’ve had really bad weather here, and surviving has taken up my time.
I did an experiment last night. I went back to the VST Effects tab in the VST Plug-in manager. I checked the hide box on several plugins. I then shut down Cubase, but left the computer running for 20 minutes before I shut it off. I then started the computer from a cold boot. All the settings were saved this time. I think the issue has to do with how long Cubase takes to save preferences once it’s shut down. I also didn’t get the “freeze dump” pop up that I had seen quite a few times on start up.
So, new protocol is to leave the computer on for half an hour after I shut down Cubase so it can do it’s business.
Thanks for the info on Profiles! I’ll check it out today.
You might want to check whether your SSD is still healthy, and whether you have activated some kind of OS write cache for the SSD. No expert about details here, sorry.
