Did you ever see scroll bars in there? If not, maybe there was an install issue. Seems unlikely, but, what else could create this problem? I do see those borders in the pics of your single window interface.
I can’t remember if I’ve seen them because I only use the docked rack, which works fine. I could try reinstalling soon.
I’m on a Mac running Sierra and my floating window Rack doesn’t have a scrollbar either. The right side docked Rack does have a scrollbar. It ain’t the prefs, Steve…trust me…I’ve been through three installations on two machines each and they both show the same results.
Maybe I’m missing something, but what’s wrong with using the mouse wheel to move up and down in the rack.
You do need to place the cursor somewhere on the Right side of the rack, otherwise turning the wheel will adjust whatever parameter is near.
But that seems to be a lot easier than trying to click on and move a scroll bar.
I don’t have any scroll bars at all on the VST rack, docked or not docked. (Windows 7)
I don’t like using the scroll wheel, because it’s too easy to accidentally change the value of a control near by, and you still have to position the mouse roughly where the scroll bars should be anyway, and the scroll bars gives a smoother scroll, so it’s easier to find things rather than the jerky step using the scroll wheel.
It’s a fundamental way in which an OS works, scroll bars are always there to navigate, and so their position and size should always be the most important fundamental design concept.
Having said that, if some users are seeing the scroll bars, then there is a bug in Cubase 9 stopping them show, as I am seeing a gap where they should be- perhaps there is a common computer setup that is causing this ? Maybe screen resolution ?
Uh oh, this problem goes deeper than we thought. Can you screenshot this?
For me also, docked bay has a scrollbar, floating window has the thick border and no scroll as in djw’s screencap.
FWIW, I’m seeing the same as djw and Grim…docked has scrollbar but floating not.
NB: This is Elements 9 on a Win 10 Laptop, haven’t upgraded the 8.5 Pro for the Desktops yet.
Thanks for the confirmations… indeed- this looks like it can’t really just be a prefs or install prob.
I used to have a scroll bar in the VST Instrument Rack in C9.01. Then I ran maintenance on the USB e-licenser while troubleshooting a problem. Now I don’t have a scroll bar (I do have two arrow up down navigation keys at the top).
This is in the free-floating window, I haven’t checked any other.
Interesting. I don’t have a repro, but I can send a message to support to explain the issue. It would not surprise me if it were to be fixed in the next update.
Win 10 (1607 - up to date) x64. No scroll bar here either on the Instruments modal window. I can scroll using the mouse wheel. I hadn’t noticed this as my instruments are usually loaded via VE Pro. Not a show stopper for me, since access via the mouse wheel is easier than the scroll bar.
And to wrap it up from my point of view: I do have a scroll bar in the VST Instruments box that is located in the right side (accessed by CTRL-ALT-R), but do not have one in the free floating window (accessed by F11). I actually have them both up simultaneously now, one with and one without.
Yes that seems easier for you. Other folks, like myself & suntower for sure, find dragging a scroll bar easier.
And I think an important point suntower has made (although it’s difficult to see through all the steam being vented
) is that if Steinberg just used the standard OS interface this wouldn’t be an issue. I’m kind of puzzled why they don’t since it seems like rolling their own (in several different flavors no less) has got to use more development resources than just using the standard.

And therein lies a major part of the problem: “somewhere”. These sorts of GUI elements should be well delineated and consistent throughout the interface. You shouldn’t have to deal with clicking “somewhere”.
I can tell you that I have been using the scrollwheel on the floating rack (as I have no choice now) and in spite of what I thought was a safe distance, I occasionally still find myself accidentally adjusting a parameter instead of scrolling the rack.
Hey, I just realized. I’m listed as the OP, even though I did not start this thread. WFT??
Nobody really started this thread. It was an off topic discussion that was taking over another thread. So Steve moved all the OT posts into a new thread.
Got it. I would not have started this thread, I don’t want to use my rants up on something that doesn’t bother me that much! ![]()

I didn’t know there was a rant quota. Thanks for the heads up.
Fixed for me in 9.0.10
