VST2 Plugins discontinued - Will Steinberg reimburse all the cash lost from that move?

Of course Steinberg is not going to give us any money refund, it would be a huge fortune, Access Virus and Universal Audio, maybe will not develop VST3… so…

What I can see is that Steinberg is going to lose an awful lot of money, because just as there are many in favor of VST3, there are many more against the decision to discontinue support for VST2… it’ s those users who will stay on the latest version of Cubase that supports VST2, and not upgrade any further to a version that won’t.

We will see…

100% agree…

In fact, it is an excellent example;

The XLR standard hasn’t changed since it first appeared, XLR connection has been around since 1950, have you ever wondered why even though there are microphones that connect via USB, XLR after 70 years, is still valid for many types of connections that encompass more than just microphones? and regarding voltages… Are you serious?

Because if so, you are proving us right that by dropping support for VST2, it is a lousy and selfish move on Steinberg’s part, as they are not considering the widespread standard of file extension VST2 that still being supported by lot of companies and users of such extension.

+1, I agree that this is a bad way to treat to the users who for years have supported Steinberg, and it is thanks to its users that the company can be sustained and still standing, Im sure that the rest of the production softwares on the market will continue to support VST2 to remain compatible in their products even if VST2 ceases to be produced and this is what at least Steinberg should consider for good.

Well, SB has never had any problems with dropping products, either.
Every time I look up the licenses on the eLicenser I get reminded of the lost plugs and those sum up to a lot of cash… Dolby and DTS Encoders, Surround Edition , The Grand, Virtual Guitarist/ Bassist…
Even a petition by a number of users to pay extra for the DolbyEncoder to further keep the Dolby license was in vain. So, since then I have only bought Nuendo and Wavelab upgrades. C’est la vie …

The Grand still works

If people came up with a better plug-in system than VST, one that didn’t have what its critics (who don’t include me) regard as VST’s serious flaws, I’d be the first to adopt that system. Absolutely. But, in spite of all the complaining, I’ve yet to see someone come up with a serious alternative to VST.

At some point the complainers are going be told to fish or cut bait. In the end, I suspect they’ll all cut bait.

Don’t get me wrong. I don’t know if I read your post the wrong way, but am I missing something?

Aren’t we all working with VST2s as well With VST3s at this point in time?

My Cubase 11 runs great and all is well.

Support of The Grand 1 was stopped and it was no longer usable in the next Windows Version. I just owned it roughly 2 Years. I did not want to spend any more money on Version 2.

No, we are not all using VST2. When I install a new plug in that has VST2 and VST3 options as well as the Pro Tools crap, if the installer lets me I only install the VST 3 version. And I’ve been doing that for at least 2 or 3 years now. As I said somewhere else, I’m not happy to think about which plugs are VST2 only that I will miss. But I bet it won’t be very many. If I opened a DAW session from 5 years ago I suspect I probably wouldn’t even recognize half the plug ins in use. (if there was some magical world where all plugs from very old sessions just loaded up with no problem and were never missing).
Some of us move on and like to try new things.

No offense, but, what the heck are you even talking about? If anything, plugins have to get less expensive, as there’s one less format to support.

Musicians really should stick to making music. They obviously don’t have any clue about business, which is something I very often notice in music production related forums.

chakkman,

My argument has been made fully on this topic, and with complete and utter clarity,

If you have read what I wrote and you still are not getting the point I was trying to make, then I am sorry.

Well, I have to apologize as I misunderstood you. I see now that you were talking about plugins you bought, and which are only available as VST2, which is a fair enough point. Although all of my payware is available as VST3 for a long time now. Of course, old payware will only be VST2.

The invocation of a “reimbursement” is pretty bold though. After all, it’s you who bought the plugins. I can’t possibly see what Steinberg has to do with your old plugins.

Hey, no need for apologies, it’s just this topic has been a jaganaught, and I am tired of it tbh.

this was more of an emotional response to be honest, and I know, it’s not pragmatic…for reasons I stated, I am just tired to keep trashing stuff…cheers!

Do you still have a USB eLicenser? An option would be to keep an older version of Cubase installed (after all, if you upgraded to Cubase 12, you’re still able to use any lower version of it) to run your VST2’s.

Or… you use a VST2 to VST3 wrapper. E.g. Blue Cat’s Patchwork.

Hey, cheers, I haven’t moved to Cubase 12 yet, scared to death from all the topics on the update to 12 HA HA!

Yes indeed, still using USB eLicenser,

I haven’t tried the wrapper program, cheers for the suggestion, will look into it.

I think I read some issues even with the wrappers, but when I get to the point where it will get to VST2s being completely wiped out, I might give it a go…

Thanks so much!

Ive been using Blue Cat stuff and Audio Gridder (an open source, cpu offload over network system) in Cubase with great success to run and offload older plugins so they dont crash CB 12.

Maybe its time that Steinberg could think of a sollution like this, and a container that can hold VST2? (the network offload thing could be a plus hehehe)
Something unsupported maybe?
The possibilities are endless with this, specially with fast internet.
You could even run plugins off site, in the bunkers of Steinie :stuck_out_tongue:

Steinberg/Cubase already has so much to gain back over the years, im very happy they ditched the dongle so it can gain some of the long lost popularity back.
But stopping VST2 too fast, will probably scare most people away from even trying CB.
