VU Meter Mode vs RMS Meter Mode - Whats the difference?

Please I need some help, i’m new to meters and dB scales. In Supervision what is the difference between VU meter mode and RMS meter mode?

They show very similar values, just that the RMS mode moves its neddles a bit slower than the VU Mode.

Aren’t all VU meters measuring in RMS?
Is this RMS mode in Supervision something else?

Thank you!

Hello,

this article in Wikipedia about VU meters might shed some light onto your question. Its last paragraph might be the most interesting one:

Hi - they are two distinct and separate ways (scales) of measuring levels (output/input audio signals) against a known reference. They have different purposes and serve internationally recognised standards.

My knowledge is limited technically, but simply :- VU or ‘Volume Unit’ is a measurement taken at a specific point in time; RMS (Root Mean Square) is an average measurement achieved over a period of time.

Beyond this, please - surf that web and really find out more and about how they relate (are applied) in practical terms. (e.g. type the question into YouTube search…!) :+1:
