I have a number of wav files that were recorded with another program that I want to work with in cubase 5. The files play fine on their own. They also play fine when I preview them before importing them; however once they come into Cubase they play fast with the voices sounding like chipmunks.

You have to check the recorded sample rate of the wav files. Then match the playback sample rate in Cubase and you should be fine.
I would first check project’s samplerate found under project>project setup,and see if your imported wavefile is the same.
