Wavelab 11 Pro breaks mounting of iso files in Windows 11

Not really,
I just deleted all reg entries with “GEARAspiWDM” in the title and one with the key “GEARAspiWDM” and “CDROM”.

I have clients who still want cds burned to listen to, etc. so I am curious as to what the status of this issue is. I agree that it should have been addressed before 11 Pro came out, but now is the time to fix it at any rate. I’ve been using Wavelab for years now. Windows 11 is here now, and has been for months, and to disable features that deal with Windows being secure doesn’t seem logical to me. It appears that just about every other Steinberg product is compatible, so it’s somewhat of a mystery to me. I believe that PG truly cares about the product, so I hope it will be resolved soon. Blessings

For this feature, Steinberg depends on the CD driver provider, Gears Sotfware. So far, no update from them.
Again, when this Windows 11 security option is disabled, you don’t run less secure as on most Windows 10 systems.

Why do you think it is enabled by default in Windows 11? Something to do? Of course not…

Disabling Core Isolation will leave your computer venerable to exploits to your processor model-specific registers (MSR).

I suggest you find someone who can supply updated drivers for the CD burning functionality in Wavelab. One look at the Gear website tells you all you need to know about how current they are…

Driver updates - GEAR Software

Surely someone else can supply something that works in Wavelab that is not out of the ark.

PG1, can you explain to me how it is not less secure when you disable Core Isolation? I notice that you have stated that as the way to get around this issue, as I need to be able to burn cds for clients as I had stated before. I’m not disagreeing with you, but it’s not clear to me why you think that is the case. Thank you in advance for your response.

2014 was a while back…

I did not say so. I said, “not less secure as on most Windows 10 systems.”… Simply because Core Isolation is not enabled in most Windows 10 installations.
Therefore, unless you were subject to attacks on your Windows 10 system or are executing untrusted software, you should not worry more today than yesterday. That’s all I want to say. I add I am not a security specialist, my reasoning is simply common sense.

But if you want maximum security anyway, enable Core Isolation, and when you need to burn CDs, unplug from the internet, and disable Core Isolation for a while.

This being said, Core Isolation can impact performances, though it depends on the hardware. There are talks about this on the internet. Or even articles such as

Thank you for the response and clarification of your statement. I understand your logic in what you’re saying. I will decide what to do about updating to Windows 11, but hopefully there will be an update to the Gear driver, or a newer driver from another manufacturer will be implemented at some point. Thanks for the link to the PC World article also.

There’s always a trade-off between performance and security. These virtualization-based security features are pretty cool…but, they definitely come with trade-offs.

As for how much they matter…most people really don’t understand modern security threats.

Your computer is not that attractive of a target. You don’t have particularly valuable data on it; you probably don’t have the kind of bank balance to make things like ransomware attacks against you particularly attractive (compared to corporations); and your exposure to basically everything is greater from a combination of social media, cloud services, and black boxes that you welcome into your network without a second thought.

What software does your router use? Is it set to the default password? Do you even know it? Is it one of the ones that’s required by most ISPs that includes remote administration tools? Do you know it’s not part of a bot net…because it’s shocking how many of them are. Are you still using the wifi password that’s printed on the sticker?

How about printers? They’re all web servers that you basically can’t configure.

Smart anything (lights, appliances, thermostats, etc.)? Are they on your main WiFi, or are they on their own air-gapped one? Can they reach the internet? Have you actually looked at the traffic they send out?

Do you actually understand the software your phones/tablets run? They all spy on you at least as much as your desktop/laptop. Speaking of which…did you jump through the hoops to disable Cortana and Telemetry? Does your computer still search amazon and google when you type into the start bar search?

Game systems? Smart watches? Fitness trackers? Smart TVs?

Anything with voice control?

Are you actually careful about what you post on social media, or are you one of the vast majority of people who provides answers to basically all of your recovery questions?

In the grand scheme of things, disabling core isolation is a TINY increase in your attack surface. All of the serious things boil down to stuff that you do without thinking about it because basically everyone choose convenience and features over security.

That article deals with processors that are not able to have Windows 11 unless you find a way to hack it to happen. It is irrelevant to Windows 11 users who run the OS on a supported CPU.

Oh I’ve been waiting to answer you… The moment I stopped work I thought…better answer this rubbish… Get your popcorn ready folks…

Meaning what? That a 3% performance hit (sometimes but not always) is a worse evil than a hacker running a coach and horses through your computer? Trade-offs? Yeah…right…

Do tell of your great knowledge…

How would you know? Maybe yours is not but you know absolute zero about mine and their attractiveness as targets.

You seem to fancy yourself as a clairvoyant. Have you considered a job as a fairground fortune teller? Don’t charge too much though because you are wrong on all of the above. I am guessing that for you to supply this as a valid argument your own network must be like swiss cheese.

Are you saying that people in here are stupid?

No they are not. That is just a lie. Maybe you have a wireless printer but all printers are not all wireless or even internet connected.

In the beginning you said…

…and now you have us all with smart lighting, smart appliances and smart thermostats…make your mind up… (btw the fortune teller thing might not be such a good idea)

So one assumes your solution to everything being secure is not to have anything connected to the internet ever no matter how well configured it is. You first. I think you should take your own advice.
The irony of it is that @PG1 said it in a previous post…

He did miss out the bit about installing Wavelab after you disable Core Isolation, making your project, burning your cd, uninstalling Wavelab, re-enabling Core Isolation though.

Do you walk around with a bag over your head to avoid being recognised? (look at the spelling…my secret is out…woe is me)

No its not and no they don’t. Some people…in fact most people…would rather be secure. Telling people to switch things off that are there to protect their systems is irresponsible, ignorant and dense. Not only that but naming things that are (as you see it) insecure does not make it right to make yourself MORE insecure because of Wavelab. The reason why most old processors are in the bin when Windows 11 came out is because they are considered to be vulnerable to various exploits. Wavelab will have to change because the OS won’t. Dog wags tail. Tail does not wag dog.

@PG1 Did you know that Cakewalk has built in CD burning functionality that still works in Windows 11? I am not sure what they are using but it might be worthy of exploration.

Just an FYI, there are plenty of tools out there for creating audio CDs… while it’s convenient to do this all in WaveLab, it isn’t too difficult to use other tools:

  1. Create a CD Image and Cue Sheet of your montage in WaveLab.
    Render Tab (Audio Montage) (steinberg.help)
  2. Use a free burning program such as CDBurnerXP to burn the wav/cue file as an audio CD.
    CDBurnerXP: Create Audio Disc

If you use another tool to burn CDs, you can uninstall the Gear software using the GEARAspi_Remover.exe utility posted above in this thread while keeping the Core Isolation enabled for security. Hope this is helpful while we wait for Gear/Steinberg to offer a solution.

Yet another Wavelab 11 update and still nothing fixed…

Every computer is an attractive target. Not for what is on the computer, but to be (ab)used for botnets, a jumping host for other attacks, cryptomining etc.

I’ve just opened a ticket regarding this security issue with Steinberg.

Is there any estimate yet when this will be fixed, i.e. when those components will be removed/replaced in WaveLab?

Just curious if you have gotten any response on your ticket from Steinberg yet? Wondering if I should do the same, as workarounds only work for a while.

Any feedback on the ticket you opened on this?

I was asked to edit this by the moderator who thinks what I wrote is untrue and that the support staff work very hard. I will do as he wishes and put it in another way by editing it and supplying FACTS as to why what is now and was below is accurate.

The support ticket mechanism here is not fit for purpose, so them not replying is par for the course… I made a support ticket about another matter over a month ago and have not received a reply yet. No reply means it is useless and pointless creating a support ticket. We have at least one person here who has made a ticket about the subject matter in this thread and as of today have no resolution. Hiding or ignoring facts does not change those facts (one could use Russia as an example)

As you can see other similar products have no problem replacing/modernising the cd burning functionality in their products. Maybe Steinberg want Wavelab users to be stuck on Windows 10 (or below).,…forever… lol.

It is somewhat baffling to me to say the least. PG has always been on top of these things, and so it’s surprising that the answer he gave was to just turn off the security feature. I understand his thinking in one respect, but in these days you can’t keep a computer secure enough. I have been using Wavelab for years now, and hope to continue to do so, and I still have clients that want cds. So I hope that there is a fix or good resolution to this problem. It’s not a matter of the staff working hard, or that your post is inaccurate. It’s just a real issue that needs to be addressed. And I will not stay on Windows 10 forever.

You can use Windows 11 with the security options of Windows 10.
