It’s fairly common in orchestral works to have some woodwind or brass instruments play in unison: a2 flutes or a4 french horns, etc. Most of the orchestral sample libraries offer these as separate patches, and we are supposed to load them into a separate MIDI track, switch to them when we write passages in unison and switch back to flute 1 and 2 when we need to write in contrapuntal style.
The MIDI part works fine in Cubase. However, things become an utter mess in the score editor, where the flute a2 unison track ends up in a separate staff together with flute 1 and 2, like this:
flute 1
flute 2
2 flutes
These unison staves take a lot of extra space, and look very unprofessional.
Unfortunately, it seems that there’s no way in Cubase to manage these unison tracks and staves professionally. All the things I have tried ends up requiring a lot of manual efforts: 1) hiding the a2 staff, 2) manually copy (or MIDI loop) the a2 track MIDI data into the corresponding 1 and 2 tracks (or everything MIDI loop into a separate MIDI track to be displayed in the score editor) to make them shown on the correct staves, and 3) set an empty MIDI channel to get rid of the unnecessary playback. Doing this also eliminates the score editor’s editing capability since it no longer points to the MIDI data in the correct a2 track.
So my question: is there a better way to automatically manage thes unison tracks and staves in Cubase score editor, or I will have to do a fair amount of cleaning to fix the things manually?
Thanks!
