Weird Audio Dropouts occurring even with new MacBook Pro M4

Is this happening to anyone else? After working for a year with an M2 MacBook Air, I just upgraded to an MacBook Pro/M4 Pro 14 Core/24 GB RAM/1 TB SSD. Because of the specs I went for, I fully expected ALL my dropouts to disappear. And although things are definitely much better, I can’t believe that there still seem to be very quick glitches occurring.

They are curious in their nature: they seem to occur at the beginning of certain parts of a project, and yet: the Audio Performance gauge does not register a dropout? If you refer to the picture, you’ll see there’s where the audio will briefly stop-for no more than a little under a second. And you can see in the Dropouts graph section where both the yellow line for the ASIO Guard and the blue line for the Real Time processing drops to zero, even though in the bottom section entitled “Dropout”, no dropouts are detected! What gives?

My Efficiency cores are running at 32%, Performance cores at 11%, and overall Cubase is taking up no more than 11% of Process resources, Cubase is using 5.3 GB of RAM, I’m running at 512 Buffer size, and my Disk Preload has been set to 6 seconds (and I have also set it to 2 seconds, simply to troubleshoot), so point being: my system hardly seems anywhere near overtaxed, and yet: these mystery dropouts are still occurring, even with such a powerful system.

So, does anyone have any insight on what might be going on?

System performance in a DAW is always the whole system, including the audio hardware and it’s drivers.

Ok, I guess that’s a good point: in my Studio I’m running a Steinberg UR 824, but. when I’m on the go, it’s Built In audio.

But this doesn’t seem to make a difference in dropouts-though I was surprised by how much less latency I get with my Steinberg interface compared to the Built-In Audio: 13 ms in/out with the Steinberg, whereas over 20 ms with Built-In.
