Weird Headphone Problem

I am running Dorico pro [Version 5.1.60.2187 (Oct 8 2024)
Dorico 5 AudioEngine Version 5.6.42.5] on a Macintosh laptop (OS Sequoia 15.4) with headphones connected to the headphone jack. The headphones appear in the Apple Audio Midi Setup app, and they work fine with YouTube, the Apple Music app etc.

But with Dorico, the sound plays back through my external monitor and not through the headphones. I have looked within Dorico but cannot find anything that directs the output away from headphones. Makes it hard to work when someone else in the house is sleeping!

Any ideas about how to fix this?

Have you tried Edit > Device Setup? You can choose an output device there.

Bingo.

I am a long-time Finale user and new to Dorico. I suppose I should have found the output choice; but not sure why it is hidden under “Edit” (rather than, say, under “Preferences” or "Play). In any case, many thanks for your prompt and helpful reply.

It’s also under Edit > Preferences > Play (at the bottom).

Another recurring headphone problem: From time to time, more or less randomly, Dorico stops playing back through the headphones. I somehow discovered that I can fix this by unplugging and replugging the headphone jack. But this seems tedious and should not be necessary. Any ideas on how to fix this?

That would suggest to me a faulty jack or plug. Are you using an external audio interface or plugging into a jack on the computer?

It’s a jack on the computer. I can try testing this with different headphones.

But I should add that at the same time that there is no sound from Dorico, I do have perfectly good sound from other applications on the computer .

Then it’s not the jack or headphones. I’ve no idea what would be going on that re-plugging in the headphones would solve.

If you go to Edit > Device Setup and there click on the Device Control Panel button, another little window will open. In there, is the “Automatically configure device” option active with you?

I do have the Automatically Configure Device checked.

And this problem gets weirder and weirder. Today I am plugging an external speaker into the laptop headphone jack. The sound from Dorico works perfectly for a short time (10-15 minutes) then suddenly stops working. When this happens the sounds from other applications on the laptop still work correctly. Dorico is apparently doing something very strange to turn off the sound.

Could you please load that project into Dorico and then from the menu choose Help > Create Diagnostic Report and post here the corresponding zip file? Thanks very much

The diagnostic report will not upload because it is > 4MB.

You can either upload it to a cloud storage provider and post a link here, or email it directly to Ulf via email at u dot stoermer at steinberg dot de.
