Weird knocking noise at the end of MIDI note when run through amp sim

Hi -

There is a knocking sound, like someone pounding cardboard or wood with a reverb effect, whenever a MIDI note finishes being played, run through the Yamaha Guitar Amp Classics Drive amp sim.

Would anyone know why it’s there? I can get rid of almost all of it with a fade curve, but I think that also may be cutting off some of the guitar note itself, and besides, that’s just a workaround anyway.

I’m not sure if that amp sim resides in Cubase, or in my Steinberg UR28M - mods, please transfer this post at your discretion.

Thanks for any help!

Hi,
I noticed that Read is turned on. Do you automate the insert’s On/Off by any chance? If there’s also a reverb involved somewhere down the line this could be a possible explanation.

Oh man…I had my heart set on a box knocking, wood cutting gnome living inside Cubase.:face_with_diagonal_mouth:

@Reco29 - thanks for that troubleshooting tip. Turning off all writes, reverbs, and indeed all plugins downstream of the amp sim: There is a single “thud” at the end of the MIDI note. That thud is a problem, even without it’s being repeated with delays, and reverb, etc.

I wonder if that is a bug in the plug-in, or something unique to my system …

@Wickham_Sky - your hopes may still be realized, haven’t ruled that out yet :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

If you bypass the Amp Sim, what happens. Also what happens with different sim presets.

If you shorten the note so it doesn’t extend across the bar line does that effect it?

@raino:

  • Bypass amp sim - no abnormality heard
  • Different sim presets - same effect. The knocking always seems to occur around 37.1.2
  • Shorten note so it doesn’t extend across the bar line 37 - same abnormal knocking sound is heard, still around 37.1.2
  • Bonus info: Clicking on the MIDI note - the abnormal knocking sound is still heard, at what sounds like the same timing
    Thank you!

What instrument are you using? A guitar sample library like MusicLab? If so, it might be the string release noise that needs adjusting.
Also, can you upload an MP3 of the sound?

Hi @Googly_Shakespeare

Here’s the amp sim ^^ … I’m not sure if it’s in Cubase, or just part of my Steinberg interface.

Yes, I’ll upload a sound, thanks for the suggestion.

In the meantime, if someone has that amp sim and wants to see if they have it also that’d be great

I think Googly was asking for the instrument that you use, not the plugin in slot 1.

Oh, sorry.

It’s Pianoteq 8, @Googly_Shakespeare .

A piano? Through an amp sim? Controversial!

I would still check the key release settings, along with damper noise, etc. These sounds can really be exaggerated when put through an amp sim.

It’s all i got ATM. When all you’ve got is a hammer, everything looks like a nail! :joy:

Excellent advice. As a master of fact, I’d bet you nailed it. Sounds like a Frankenstein of a pedal release, on steroids.

Will check it out and report back.
