Weird Layout Default

This is a screenshot of a Bassoon part as it was laid out by default - The signposts are on, but there aren’t any to see - and I also reset layout, to make sure - why does it default to such a weird layout? why the extra page instead of having the last staff on page 2? Am I missing something here? Is there any way to force Dorico to re-calculate a part’s layout?

Thanks!

By any chance, don’t you have a casting off set to 8 systems per frame for this layout?

I do not, and I now see that Dorico also ignored my 6 bars per system selection

Are you looking at the correct layout?

Yes, I am

Can you share the project file here, so someone can take a look?

Thanks a lot!!!

Here’s a truncated version of the file with just the bassoon part - it still looks the same

Thanks!!

Could you please tell me - what is the Vertical Justification setting I had that made Dorico put the last stave on a new page when so much space was left on page 2?

and also - is there a way to get Dorico to treat multi measure rests as one measure when calculating casting off?

Thanks!

For my first file, I just turned off fixed bars per system in Layout Options→Staves and Systems→Casting off. For the second one, I kept the fixed number and changed Layout Options→Vertical Spacing→Vertical Justification to 60 and 80, and reduced the Inter System Gap to 10. All Dorico defaults I think.

You can set the max width, if that helps under Engraving Options→Rests. Only helps without casting off.

It wasn’t vertical justification that did this – justification is only applied after Dorico has put onto each page the number of systems that will fit there according to your settings.

It was a combination of your inter-system gap (11 spaces, Dorico default is 10) and music frame bottom margin (42.5 pts, Dorico default is 30 – or whatever the equivalent is in your preferred unit of measurement). Even though it looks like there’s a bunch of space at the bottom of p.2, Dorico is not able to put that last system there and still respect both of those settings. If you change either one in the file you posted, then the last system will move onto p.2.
