What do you folks use for nice clean ,full guitar sounds?

Retired and going to my hand at recording again .What do you folks use for nice clean ,full guitar sounds? My recordings always sound dull, lifeless. I have quit a bit of gear from my playing days, Fender amps, a box full of pedals ,(new and vintage),also a boss me 80,but I would like to try just using vst.I have guitar into U-phoria umc 204, trial version of Cubase elements, waves free plugin pack . Amplitude 4 . What plugins would you recommend, and in what order should i put them ? Also what should i use in the channel strip? Thanks in Advance

use a fender tube amp( doesn’t matter what wattage TBH) with an SM57 and a Royer 121 (or other similar ribbon mic) and you’re good to go. If you can’t get a nice clean, full guitar sound from that, something’s wrong.

Plugins are OK if used well but a fender tube amp, mic’d properly will give you a clean, full guitar tone.

Other option is to plug directly into a really good preamp.Channel strip. A lot of 80/90’s funk guitar was D.i. into the desk. Ted Greens solo album was done this way and he has a wonderful clean/full tone.

If you want to use Amplitube, try the Leslie amp with the gain turned down, with a bit of compression to even out the input, maybe some big dollops of reverb and echo.

Here are a couple of guitar amp vsts.

  1. UAD Showtime (UAD Showtime '64 Tube Amp – Universal Audio)
  2. Neural DSP Morgan Amps (Morgan Amps Suite - Neural DSP)
  3. Neural DSP Tone King (Tone King Imperial MKII - Neural DSP)

the problem with AMp VST’s is unless you get the correct impedance and level going into them they wont sound or feel correct, so your choice of interface is crucial in getting the correct level/impedence before the AD conversion and then hitting the VST, hence the reason Kemper/Fractal/Tonex/ Neural DSP hardware usints work well because the input is carefully ‘tuned’ to behave like an amp input… If you actually own a decent tube amp already then it’ so easy to stick an SM57 in front of it and get a good clean sound.

This is why I will still be 80 and holding on to my JCM800 and AC15..
