Okay, I’ve read thru the info on e-licensing ending in 2025 but I still do not understand what I actually need to do to be able to continue use 9.5 elements, and the 5.0 that I use with my Tascam interface. The on-line info is very confusing and talks about inputting a activation code but all I have is the e-license code. IT talks about it being sent but when you open the download assistant but I get nothing.
any help on how to do this or what actually needs to be done would be greatly appreciated.
As soon as the eLC server is shut down you won’t be able to transfer your license to a new computer or sell it. You also will not be eligible for a discount if you decide to get a newer version. That’s all really.
This is about the process for upgrading to Cubase 14. Which you can only do up until they shut down the old system. If your eLicense is on a dongle that should continue to work until it physically breaks or becomes incompatible with the OS. If you are using a soft eLicense it will stop working when the server shuts down.
Thanks everyone for the quick replies.
I would love to be able to upgrade but my system is not new enough to handle any of the new versions past V10. So far V9.5 is more than enough for what I do as I’m not a pro, just someone who uses it for my own enjoyment.
Thanks again all and I hope you have a great Thanksgiving!

In that case, the least expensive option would be to purchase a USB-eLicenser and transfer the Elements 9.5 license to it, while you still can. That way, you can continue to use Elements 9.5 on any computer as long as the USB-eLicenser is plugged into it, for as long as the USB-eLicenser hardware stays working (I have 4, and none have ever died, although the plastic casing on the older ones is not very robust).
Well I went to Steinberg.net to check on the price of a USB eLicenser and where one can be purchased and they do not show the U.S. as one the countries in the drop down menu…so that’s as far as I could go with that research! Hmmm. I do know that it must be one of their USB stick as there is something special about it.
Any ideas anyone?
I’d like to think Sweetwater used to sell them but I am not sure about that.
I don’t see the item listed on their website but you might try calling them.
The stick costs basically the same as an update to C14 Elements but if you are sure you’re computer can’t handle it…
What happens to products with the Soft-eLicenser-based licensing service?
As long as the Soft-eLicenser is active and contains all purchased licenses, the products can still be used without limitations. Please keep in mind that it is not possible to move licenses to other computers or reactivate them after an operating system reset. If you intend to stay on the eLicenser-based licensing service, consider transferring your licenses stored locally on the Soft-eLicenser to a USB-eLicenser before the end-of-service date. The USB-eLicenser is not affected by moving to other systems or resetting the operating system.
I checked with Sweetwater and they show it as no longer available as sis several other places I’ve checked but I believe I’ve located one that I hope will do the job.
Yeah, I would love to upgrade but a new computer is not in the budget right now, and as I said above, I only use Cubase to record my own songs, doing all the vocals and playing all the instruments myself. And I know that none of my stuff is anything that will set the music scene on fire, I just do this for my own enjoyment. If I make a few people smile in the process than’s good enough for me.
Hi, Moptop63, It appears that I am in the same state as yours, 9.5 does my job, still cannot upgrade any further. So, usb-licencer is the only solution? Have you found any other solution other than usb-licencer?
Thanks bas
Thank you for the reply,
My Pc cannot go further than Win8.1. Also I am using a Firewire Audio card, which is an extra drawback. So leaving the system as it is , it means that elements 9.5 will soon cease to work? Even offline if it matters?
Regards Bas
No it will not. It keeps working even after the shutdown of the server infrastructure, that is not needed for your eLicenser. The problem for you is just that your Soft eLicenser might be damaged, by some driver changes or a hardware problem and that means the license will be invalidated.
If you buy a USB eLicenser stick and move the license to that dongle you can keep using your software until that piece of hardware dies.
The USB stick would be the best way to go IF…IF you can find one. Steinberg’s site no longer shows them as an available item. And Sweetwater, Amazon, and most other places are all out as well.
It would be nice if Steinberg created a download patch that would disable that part of the program and allow them to be run license free. After all it’s not like they are still supporting those older versions so they really wouldn’t be loosing any revenue from doing that.
It’s very obvious that there are a lot more CB users out there like myself that don’t have the option of upgrading because of computer spec limitations but are perfectly happy with the version they currently have.
Yes, I understand that it’s Steinberg is a company were profit is the main goal, and I’m not ditzing them for that by no means, but also it would be nice if they also acknowledged the loyalty of their customers and that it’s that loyalty that helped them grow their business to what it is today. In the way they are handling it now it just feels like they are abandoning us.
This has been discussed in many threads already. But again, this would require a huge amount of work to recreate all the different development environments for all products (how far back do you want to go, Cubase SX or what?) and that makes no sense at all.
Have a look in how Apple, Microsoft, Adobe and many other treat their loyal customers?
Anyway, Steinberg mentions in the support document that you still can contact support after the shutdown if something goes wrong. So they do not “abonding” you.
