Excuse my ignorance, but what does the marking at the end of the clip in the audio montage as seen in the attached image indicate?
I’m not sure I have seen it or looked into it before.

This is an indication, that the underlying file, is too short for the clip. The grey part will be silent.
Often seen when you replace a clip in a montage with a new file, but it’s a little shorter in length than the original clip.
