What parameters need to be changed to add Finale Jazz Font?

I’m not describing it very well in the topic, but my question is basically what do I need to do to change as much as possible to use SMuFL Finale Jazz Font, including Finale Jazz Font chord symbols and suffixes? I know that the Library/Music Font needs to be changed to Finale Jazz Font, but does the Default Text Font in Font Styles need to be changed to Default Text if Finale Jazz is the default, or do I need to choose Jazz Finale Text instead? Are there other preferences where I need to change it to Finale Jazz? I really would love to substitute the glyphs in Finale Jazz that I like in favor of the default ones they have, and I wouldn’t mind taking the time to customize them if possible, but it seems not to be an option.

I have been able to go into the Engrave page and edit a chord by going into Edit Chord Symbol Appearance/Edit Chord Symbol Component and enter the Unicode number of the symbol I want to substitute, but have not been able to get it to save in any way, even just in the document. Even though I had selected Jazz Font for the chord symbols, it still defaults to Bravura and I have to change it manually and then choose the Unicode number. I understand that chord definitions work differently in how they build chords in Dorico than Finale, so I’m not expecting it to work the same way, but I would like my Dorico charts to look as much as possible like my Finale charts. I liked being able to create custom expressions and articulations.

Are there any other parameters or preferences I need to change to Finale Jazz Font? I was able to change the default ugly triangles to Jazz Font triangles for major 7ths and choose other Jazz Font things like dashes for minor, etc., so I should be content with that. Is it possible to have Edit Chord Symbol Component to default to Finale Jazz instead of Bravura? In my examples, the Dorico and Finale Jazz glyphs are the same chord suffixes but I just think the Finale Jazz glyphs look better and I’d like to use them if possible.

I may have to just create every chord I need and save it to a separate document that I can copy and paste them from - I am able to copy the chords, if not type them in.

Welcome to the forum @AliciaB3!

As long as this is selected then I think it changes automatically for you. Well, it did for me when I just tested it…

I’m not too familiar with all of this but do you have any luck by changing this font?:

When I changed it there, it did something strange (changed the brackets into HUGE brackets and changed #11 into (natural sign) 11. so it obviously has some effect! Thanks for answering - I’ll keep messing with it and see what I can find.

Yes, I have it set like that. I do have most of the settings go to Jazz, and it does seem to be the default text if Jazz is the default music font. Chord symbols and suffiixes are just weird. Thanks for the welcome, also.

When you’re changing Font Styles in Dorico, some styles are “Music Fonts” (e.g. Bravura, Finale Jazz) and some styles are “Text fonts” (e.g. Academico, Times).

So make sure you’re using the right sort.

Also, note that “Bravura Text” is a version of Bravura (i.e. a music font) scaled for use in text environments; whereas “Finale Jazz Text” is “a text font designed to match the Finale Jazz music font”.

There are of course plenty of other handwritten fonts. Jazz is usually thought of as the worst!

Yes, I know it is, but I like it anyway. I use a standard font for work I do for other people, but for my own charts, I still like it. It’s the font that I ‘grew up’ with. :grinning:
