What specs are needed for an Android tablet to track from an interface?

I’m thinking about setting up a “micro PA” with a small mixer that can enable multi-track recording. I have an Android pad, a Samsung Galaxy Tab A8, which has an Octa core processor (2 GHz) with 4GB RAM. If I ran Cubasis on the Galaxy and I just want to record live tracks with no significant VST effect processing, is this practical? Any guess how many simultaneous tracks this might be able to record?

With the “micro PA” setup I’m looking at, I would probably never record more than 8 tracks at a time, and 4-6 would be more typical. But if this is a workable scenario, I might want to use the Galaxy/Cubasis with another mixer that might track 12 or 14.

Is this wishful thinking, or does it have a chance?

FWIW, I was able to install the Cubasis trial on that Galaxy tablet, so there is that. I don’t have the mixer yet, but maybe I will try to get Cubasis working with a Zoom H8 recorder that can operate as an interface. That can track 8 channels, which would essentially answer my question.

Hi @cparmerlee

Thanks for your message.

Please note that Cubasis for Android is limited to 2 ins/outs, when being connected to an audio interface. In addition, Cubasis for Android offers limited audio and MIDI hardware support only, Steinberg does not currently guarantee full compatibility

Please see the features of all our available Cubasis versions compared right here:

Best wishes,
Lars

The chart says “Physical inputs/outputs: 2”. I only need one physical connection, the USB port. Are you saying that with any USB audio interface connected to an Android device, we can only record 2 tracks simultaneously, even if that one physical USB device can actually present 10x10?

Hi @cparmerlee

If you use Cubasis for Android with an audio device, the number of audio inputs is limited to 2 ins/outs.

Best,
Lars

These type of descriptions always confuse me…does it mean; 1 input + 1 output or 2 inputs and/or 2 outputs?

Hi @CJ_Monster

On Android it is limited to 2 inputs (stereo) and 2 outputs (stereo).

Best,
Lars

Yeah the huge issue is Android has not moved to an open socket-based audio and video IO like Win/ DirectX, apple AU, and Linux ( AV Rack ??) that allows for IO flexibility and 3rd party plugins that media production needs
