Hi, I recently downloaded the free version of HALion Sonic Free version for iPhone and iPad and like it very much. I’d like pretty much the same for my MacBook or Windows. I don’t care about the deep sound design and editing as is available in the full version which I’ve installed as the 30-day trial. After playing with it for a few days, I feel I don’t need it so I will uninstall it at the end of the trial period.
All I am looking for is the desktop version of the free iPad version. Is HALion Sonic 7 Collection the right choice for me?

The free Halion Sonic 7 player includes just a few presets and only a couple of free instruments like LoFi Piano that you can download.
The Halion Sonic 7 collection is a massive collection of instruments/presets/content using the free Halion Sonic 7 player. It’s like the full Halion 7 version but without the ability to generate/edit sounds from scratch. So I guess Halion Sonic 7 collection is exactly what you want.
Purchased the collection. Two issues noted, though. Over 450 presets are locked, guess they are not part of the collection and must be purchased separately. Which is a bummer because nearly all of these presets are included in the $15 iOS version.
Second, wanted to download a pdf version of the manual but the download is just a blank page.
Other than these two issues, I love it very much. New to Steinberg instruments so please excuse my lack of knowledge.
First: Be sure to register and activate your Sonic Collection key in the Activation Manager. If that step is missed a lot of content will not unlock properly.
Be sure to install all of the Sonic 7 content.
Launch the stand alone version and let it sit there and simmer for an hour or so, as there is a database server (can be shared with lots of things Steinberg) that fires up in the background and keeps the libraries scanned. Depending on your system, it might take a little time for that first run to get everything settled in. Should be good to go with future instances that start up quickly from there.
Note, if you’d ever installed something like a demo version of full HALion, do uninstall all that first (Including the sound libraries, as there are some libraries fully unlocked (mostly templates and example type instruments, plus some staple unlocked waveform layers for building your own instruments), that come with full HALion, but not Sonic.
If you keep getting locked or unavailable instruments showing, please share a screen shot. We forum folks might be able to help you track down exactly what libraries you might want to remove, and perhaps reinstall through the Library manager.
Or, if in doubt, remove it ALL (Apps and Libraries), and do a fresh install from the start. Again, be sure you’ve ‘activated’ your Sonic Collection key in Steinberg Activation Manager.
Thank you, Johnny. After some efforts, was able to save it to the desktop. Just clicking the link still showed an empty page (almost a screenshot of the first pdf page where nothing was clickable) but pressing the back button in the browser, gave me a list of all the manuals available and I was able to find and download the manual to my computer.
I have made sure the software is registered and activated in the Activation Manager. I’ll try to keep the standalone open for a long period of time and see if anything changes.
I did install the trial version of full HALion before purchasing the Sonic Collection but made sure to uninstall the core and dependent libraries of the program before installing the purchased Sonic Collection.
I wanted to attach screenshots but can’t figure out how to do it. I’ll try to describe as best as I can. Hopefully, it’ll make some sense.
So I have three products listed under My Products. HALion 7 (which I assume is the trial version), HALion Sonic 7 Collection (all components installed), and Steinberg Classics (also all components installed). But if I go to HALION 7, it shows Content HALion 7 (30.34 GB) is not installed. I haven’t bothered to install it because I figured it came with and belongs to the full HALion 7 version (the trial version).
Am I wrong about it and do I need to install it after all?

No, you do NOT want to keep or install full HALion (Demo Mode will stop working when your Demo key expires) nor it’s variant of the libraries. If they are present, uninstall them.
In your Activation Manager, if you’ve ever installed a Steinberg Demo, it’s normal to still see the keys indefinitely, but they simply do not work anymore once ‘expired’.
What OS?
If you can browse all of your Steinberg apps, launch “Steinberg Library Manager”. I.E. In Windows I can tap the Windows Key (or click the start bar) and begin typing in Stein, and the app will show up in a list.
If you see “HALion 4 Factory Content” remove it (hold overs from your full H7 demo installation). As far as I know the rest of the content is interchangeable with Sonic Collection, but it won’t hurt to remove all the libraries and reinstall fresh downloads of all the Sonic Collection content if you keep having ‘issues’.
Some content might officially come with other Steinberg Apps too (I.E. Cubase Pro comes with several Sonic instruments such as Verve Piano, Iconica Sketch, etc.), and you can detect this in Steinberg Download Assistant under the apps you have registered.
Again, if you’re on Windows, you can do a screen shot by tapping your Print Screen key (Above the Ins key on full size keyboards, if a laptop or condensed keyboard it’ll probably be a special key combo).
From Windows 10 forward (I have no clue about Macs), you can then drag a lasso around the area you wish to snapshot, or choose to take the entire screen(s), or even enter into a mode to capture animations, etc. If you just want to grab a specific window, hold alt key while tapping print screen. That process puts an image in your Windows System Clipboard.
Once the snapshot is in your system clipboard, you can simply ctrl-v to paste it into the forum here (or into your favorite image editor for manipulation or saving to a file).
Hey Brian, sorry for the confusion. I know how to take screenshots on both Windows and Mac, my problem is I don’t see any way to attach a file in this forum. As I reply this to you, usually, there’s an icon to click which will allow me to pull a saved screenshot from my local drive as an attachment. That’s what I’m not finding here as I reply to you. Maybe I’m overlooking something very obvious. If you can help me with that, I’ll send the attachment. I already have the screenshots saved.

In the Library Manager, I have Anima, Auron, Beat Box, Eagle, FM Lab, Halion Sonic 3 Combis, Studio Strings, Tales, Trip, Trium, Voltage, and World Percussions.
In my Activation Manager, I have 3 products listed - HALion 7 (Trial Not Activated, expires on 2026-09-08), HALion Sonic 7 Collection (Activated, and the one I actually purchased), and Steinberg Classics (Activated, and a freebie).
Altogether, in the standalone app, I have 5024 sounds of which about 450 are locked. This is what I was trying to figure out if they are part of the collection package or are they separate purchases.
As a small sample, Bright Honky Tonk, Bright Rock Piano, Compressed Rock Piano, Double Piano, Film Piano, Gramophone Piano, Piano Jam, Piano MW Strings, Warm Piano & Pad are in locked position, along with about 400+ more such locked sounds.
Hope this all makes sense. Once again, I have not been able to find a way to attach files in this forum so making it kinda difficult to explain.
Open Activation Manager, hold your shift key, and click the refresh icon near the top right of the window (cycling arrows).
Attachments in Forum:
Once trusted (usually requires a certain number of posts), you can drag files/images right into your thread editor, cut and paste from the system clipboard, and there are also various buttons/controls to upload files, or groups of them.
This shows us that that the “Bright Honky Tonk” preset is part of the “Sonic Selection” library. I think most if not all of the other stuff you listed is as well.

This library should indeed be unlocked with a Sonic Collection key! It also should get unlocked with any Cubase, Nuendo, Dorico, or Live key (Even the free version of Dorico SE)!
If you keep getting issues after having refreshed all of your licenses in Activation Manager (Hold shift and click the refresh icon), you might try removing the Sonic Selection library, and reinstalling it.
You can find installers for this with any of the Steinberg Hosts in SDA (Cubase, Dorico, etc, it will be named, “HALion Sonic Selection - Content”, at a size of 3.35gig), or you can grab the base Sonic Collections content again (29.57gig) and reinstall that.
Hi Brian, thanks again for the detailed explanation. I did exactly that and found out sounds are indeed missing from Sonic Selection and the entire library called ‘Trip’.
Refreshing didn’t help.
I couldn’t find individual downloads for Sonic Selection or Trip so now I am downloading the entire Sonic Collection (29.57 GB). Hopefully, this will resolve this issue but if not, are their individual downloads available? And if yes, can you please provide direct links to them?
Well, reinstalling Sonic Collections didn’t do anything! All those files are still missing.
Any other suggestion, Brian? Please let me know if you need any screenshot. I still don’t see any way to attach files in this forum but I think I can add attachments if I reply from within Gmail.

While it’s not very clear in the promo materials, I believe Sonic Collection comes with a lot of other content as well…as in everything in Sonic Selection (Base GM soundset, plus a lot of nice instruments that ship with Steinberg Hosts, plus all the stuff that shipped with Sonic 3, 2, and perhaps even older).
A good bit of that content, Namely “HALion Sonic Factory Content” is actually quite nice, and very user tweakable. Instead of using special (and sometimes limited) macro editors done by the content developer, it exposes some more universal looking ‘full HALion like’ parameter sets to sound-craft with. You get direct access access to ‘envelopes’, LFO modules, and quite a bit more.
While this content goes way back, it’s really good/classic bread and butter stuff. It’ll also be where the majority of your ‘drum kits’ come from. In my humble opinion, the meat and potatoes of Sonic Collection is going to be in these very Yamaha MOTIF like Libraries:

You can tweak and save these sounds out as ‘layer’ presets, then combine them into very lush sounds in a new program slot. In effect, you’re getting the rompler side of a pretty high end MOTIF keyboard, plus a stack of additive, subtractive, and granualr synths. Add FM Lab, and you’re getting one of the expensive synth boards as well. If you get the free Colors and X Stream synths, you’re in some ways entering MONTAGE territory
It’s possible to get “Sonic Selection” as an individual download, but AFAIK Trip is only bundled with your larger Sonic Collection content (It’s also in the HALion bundle, even bigger, but you don’t want/need that one).
Just for future reference: To get “Sonic Selection” all by itself, Open “Steinberg Download Assistant” and pick any of the Steinberg Hosts in the left column (even if you don’t own one), and you should see options to download “HALion Sonic Selection - Content”. If you don’t already own/run a Steinberg Host of some sort, Dorico SE is a great place to look. In fact, go ahead and get a free key for it, let your friends know about it, as a Dorico SE key would allow people you collaborate with to grab Free Dorico and install it along with Sonic 7 and Sonic Selection. Even if they decide to remove Dorico SE, they can keep Sonic 7 and the Sonic Selection library for use stand alone, or in other hosts (They’d still need to keep their Dorico SE ‘key’ activated). Provided you stick with sounds in “Sonic Selection”, you’d know your partner could access and use those sounds ‘without charge’.
Sonic 7 can be set to become solid General MIDI File player too.
I see you’ve gone ahead and grabbed the whole bundle again…
If you got the full content set with Sonic 7 (This will have everything that ever shipped with Sonic/Sonic Collections up to ‘Sonic 3’). Somewhere near the era when the dongle was dropped, Sonic 7 Collections was released to replace the old “Sonic 3” product, and it added Tales, and FM Lab content libraries.
If you have those 3 content packages, then you should have it all.
Once downloaded, it is possible to look where you have Download Assistant set to store downloads and set up your own backup installation media. You could even portion it out in directories and such so it’s easy to install and remove things from your system at will (I know internal disk storage can cost a premium on modern Macs, and carrying external drives everywhere can be a royal PITA).
Double check you have enough hard drive space to hold it all? I suppose if you’re running out of space it might cause things to choke and not give adequate warnings?
If it’s looking like you need to make some choices and conserve disk space, let us know here in the forum. We can teach you some methods to stash things on external media, and ‘move’ things about as needed. Library Manager makes it easy to ‘register’ libraries from any location, or to ‘move them’ from location to location.
If you’re handy with your command line (sudo?) and know your way around symbolic links and such, you have even more options at hand to manage your disk space across different partitions and devices.
After that…
One last thing I can think of to try is deleting the mediabay3.db files in your user files area.
I’m not sure where such things go on Mac OS, but in Windows it’s in: %APPDATA%\Steinberg\HALion Sonic_64
or the long way to get there:
system_drive\Users\your_account_name\AppData\Roaming\Steinberg
You can find a similar db file for other Steinberg Hosts and instruments in %APPDATA%\Steinberg\
What’s going on here? Steinberg hosts and instruments share a common database server. The server regularly scans various folders on the system and creates a db file for Steinberg apps and instruments. Installation locations for your vstsound libraries (Managed with Library Manager) is one of the directories (plus all the vstsound archives within) that the server keeps scanned.
If you locate these mediabay3.db files and rename them (as a backup), or simply delete them, then start Sonic or a Steinberg Host like Cubase, the dbserver will start up in the background, scan your system, and rebuild those files.
The only drawback here is if you’ve done custom tags and ratings in Steinberg media bay those will be lost. So for future reference, it’s not a bad idea to make a note of this for whatever backup plan/system you have in place. To preserve most of your custom work in the db, have a backup source you can revert to if you have similar trouble again.
Personally, this is only something I’ve had to do once, and I’ve been with Steinberg Cubase since the days of Windows 7, Cubase 7, and HALion 5/Sonic 3…Dorico from version 1. My issue popped up about the time Steinberg was doing away with the old Dongle and rerolling all of the instrument libraries to become Dongle Free, and I believe it was with Groove Agent rather than HALion, but somehow, some of my medibay3.db files got corrupted.
If cleaning up the db files doesn’t get you sorted, start a support ticket in your MySteinberg account. Maybe there’s something I’m missing, or a known issue with Macs that I’ve yet to see on my Windows Rig.

Now to the issue at hand, I downloaded and reinstalled again last night hoping things will get better in the morning but no such luck. Those presets are still missing. I did find the mediabay3.db, renamed it, let it recreate but, again, no cigar!
Hard drive space is an issue but even after installing all, I still have over 70 gig free. Generally, that should not be an issue but then I don’t know anything about how Steinberg programs work.
My Download Assistant looks just like yours. See attached files. (I’m sending this reply through Gmail so I can add attachments. Replying in the forum still restricts my account from adding attachments). Also attached screenshots of Activation Manager, Sonic Selection Missing Files, Missing Presets in Trip, and a screenshot of the libraries.
Looks like you have the libraries. I’m clueless as to why so many Trip presets are showing as locked for you.
It’s odd that Sonic Selection stuff is showing as locked too.
At this point I’m out of ideas. Since it’s easy to do, you might try removing and reinstalling Download Assistant, Activation manager, and the Sonic 7 app and reinstalling them (leave the content libraries alone this time).
If that doesn’t sort things, filing support ticket is all the advice I have left.
