When dragging and dropping a MIDI note, the note gets slightly off grid

I recently moved from Cubase 10.5 to 12, and there have been some changes that have been hindering my workflow. One of them is that when you pick up a MIDI note in the MIDI editor now, it hovers slightly as you’re moving it, making the note slightly off grid vertically. With my current view and zoom level, this makes it quite annoying to place the note. Both because it’s harder to see where it will land, and because it has to do that little “move” when you pick it up and drop it. I know it seems minor and that keyboard shortcuts can be used to bypass it entirely, but I wondered if there’s any way to turn it off. It just felt much more precise previously, as the note stays within its vertical slot.

Hi and welcome to the forum,

What exactly do you mean, please?

What kind of Grid do you use? Is the Snap enabled? Do you move the Note Up/Down (transpose), or Left/Right?

I wanted to include one screenshot from each version, but since I’m a new user I’m apparently only allowed one photo in the post.

Here’s the screenshot from Cubase v12. I’ve selected a note and I’ve started to move it. As opposed to v10.5 where it stay exactly where you’re moving it, here it starts to hover ever so slightly. It both makes the action of picking it up feel less responsive, and it make sit harder to aim in some instances. It might seem insignificant, but compared to 10.5, it feels very off. I’m sure it’s never going to be addressed but I’d pay Steinberg to fix it, it’s that annoying.

Notes can be moved easily up and down with arrow keys yes, and I use that. But when I’m moving a note horizontally, it’s much faster to drag it to the exact location I want it, vertical placement included. And now that it’s not exactly on the grid, it’s really annoying to aim in that regard.

In the screenshot you posted your grid is not activated - that might be the problem…

As far as I can see that’s just in terms of horizontal movement (quantizing). It still hovers vertically when I select it regardless.

There is no way to change that behaviour. It takes some time to get used to but you will get used to it.
Actually the horizontal hovering part is still getting on my nerves way more than the vertical one. Ever so often when I drop a note it jumps to the incorrect position.

Not sure I will, it’s just imprecise since it changes the position in a way that’s not intended. Might go back to using 10.5 haha
