When MIDI Recording, lanes are not muted

Have Cubase corrected this yet?

Hello, same problem, here, and as all of you, i find it quite astonishing that is even an issue!! It seems so obvious and easy to make an option to mute precedent take if needed…
I don’t really know the protocol to get in touch with cubase developer but did you have any feedback from them concerning this issue?
Would love to have that in a new version, and it would definitely get me to pay for the upgrade.
Thanks

Same problem occurring here CB12 Pro. I find it unusual to have to make a feature request for something to work as the app says that it should. It says it should be muted. Instead, I’m hearing it.

Broken. Not used to monitoring all tracks while recording MIDI unless I asked for it.

Hi, can anyone tell me if this has been fixed in Cubase 13? Thanks.

@MortonB

Seems that, at least, the Stacked and Mix-Stacked (no mute) modes are now behaving as expected (C13.0.21) : in cycle mode, using the former now allows only the hearing of the current lane ; the latter mixing all the previouly recorded lanes with the current recorded one.

So, an obvious progress since C11 (I admit that I don’t remember the C12 behavior, having used the workaround of my previous post without further tests on it) : it was the main thing that was annoying me previously. So, there has indeed been a fix, but I don’t remember having seen an info in the recent Release Notes related to the issue…

All right, what you’re describing is how it works in 12 too, so that’s probably why it isn’t mentioned in the Release Notes for 13.

I tried “tricking” 12 into muting previous takes by using “Stacked” mode with a longer than needed loop cycle, hoping I could then stop and start my recordings as I wish and still have Cubase mute the previous takes, but the muting only happens if the program is allowed to complete the loop cycles.

Hopefully Steinberg will fix this down the line. Its definitely a little annoying having to manually mute one’s takes.

Anyway, thanks.

THIS IS ISSUUE SOOOOO PAINFUL!! Steinberg, please get on this! How the heck does anyone work this way?? We need the previous lanes to be muted when recording new lanes It should behave like recording in lanes on audio tracks does… . (Perhaps with a “merge mode” option for those that want to just add midi layers in lanes.)

I have been working in Cubase for around 4 years now and it’s hard to believe they’re unable to do this.

Well, having just started trying some keyboard recording, I was amazed to find how awkward MIDI overdubbing is compared with audio.

What is worse is that the manual is absolutely silent on how to do a punch-in record with MIDI to get a new version. You want to hear what is there already without going into muting etc.

In retrospect, I realise I had issues with this on programming MIDI & drums but dismissed it. It’s amazing that a MIDI track can’t be set to overlay mode. Surely that’s a relatively easy fix?

Add me down for an improvement here. It should be just like audio.

Pro tools . NOW Has it. MIDI lane.

Hey there, after reading the topic it’s still not clear for me:

Is it possible to mute the MIDI channel but only when recording? When I record over existing midi take, I always hear the existing notes back, which makes absolutely no sense when recording another take.

Obviously, I can mute the channel manually but it’s a nuisance.

Thanks

Bump. This is really painful.

Another bump. A mute option on midi lanes would be a start, but proper muting when overdubbing midi is essential.

I just noticed this problem as I am recording more regularly.

bump :frowning:

Just ran into this problem and it’s really frustrating. Hope they will fix it and get the MIDI to auto-mute when recording a new lane

Whoa, Cubase. Seriously? This is bad. New to Cubase, I thought it was the midi king? Am I going to protools? How are composers dealing with this? Could someone weigh in that does multiple midi passes and then comps together a take regularly? This is my main workflow as a keyboardist coming from logic. What’s the fastest workflow?

So I have to manually mute the last takes from the cycles so that they don’t play back if I want to do a new take? Also.. I LOSE my comp when I want to do a new take because I had to mute all those comped regions? Whhhhaaaat? Noooo. I’m nearing the end of my Cubase trial. Was about to pay. Protools instead?

Someone show us the workflow if there is one. Happy to learn a new approach.
