I’m new to Dorico (version 6), still getting acclimated. I know I’ve seen “Engrave” mode before, but it disappeared and I don’t seem to be able to getting back. Can anyone help me please?
Dorico 6 is a paid upgrade. Did you buy it?
Jesper
Which edition (SE, Elements, Pro) are you using? Engrave mode is not available in SE.
Thanks for the replies. I bought what they were selling when Finale was phasing out, version 5. I saw the option to download version 6, so I went for it and I wasn’t charged. Here’s the info: Version 6.0.0.6026 (Apr 29 2025)
Dorico 6 AudioEngine Version 6.1.0.13
You can download Dorico 6 free of charge – but you can’t use it without buying an update.
If you’d like to try out Dorico 6 for 60 days before deciding whether you’d like to purchase the update, you can request a trial license here:
Got it. Seems to me they should make everything available in the trial run so people can decide whether or not they want to buy it. When your reply came in, I’d already started to process of (re)downloading version 5!
Thanks for the input!
Everything is available in the trial – but you have to request a (free) trial license. If you just download the product and start using it, I guess you won’t have full functionality.
If a Dorico Pro 5 user tries this and decides to not purchase the update and uninstalls the Pro 6 Trial, will the Pro 5 be still fully working as it used to? And does the uninstaller remove all the traces of Pro 6 Trial (without removing any Pro 5 stuff)?
You never know about computers, do you…? ![]()
Yes, your existing Dorico 5 installation is unaffected by installing the Dorico 6 trial version, and it is similarly safe to uninstall Dorico 6 without affecting Dorico 5.
Thank you. Okay, I’m back in Dorico 5 now. I’m able to access “Engrave” mode, but I’ve hit another roadblock. I want to add a graphic (logo) to my project. I selected “Insert Frames,” but I read that they need to be unlocked in order to use them. I can’t find where to unlock them in version 5. Can somebody please tell me where that is?
The locks display as part of the left panel when you select the Frames tool in Engrave mode.
But it’s not true that frames need to be unlocked in order to use them – is that an AI hallucination? The locks indicate which sides of the frame are “anchored” to sides of the page, which lets frames auto-resize when the page size changes.
Thank you so much, @dspreadbury. ![]()
If Dorico Pro 6 Trial allows saving of projects, can Dorico Pro 5 open them later if the Pro 6 Trial is uninstalled?
Thank you again. ![]()
I’d agree that this is inaccurate, if not untrue. Don’t use AI, which has proven itself very bad at comprehending documentation.
Yes, projects saved in Dorico 6 can be opened in Dorico 5 (and indeed all previous versions of Dorico). If you use new features that are present only in Dorico 6, those will of course not appear when you later open the project in an earlier version.
Thank you very, very much, Daniel. ![]()
Incredible. Dorico (Pro) trial is amazing. 60 days, allows saving, saved projects can be opened in earlier versions. No trial of any other software comes even close to this. Fantastic.
@MSTS.Music
If you believe it is a good thing you are wrong.
As it seems there is neither a check or a message about the features that could happen to be “hidden” in a 6.x project when opened in 5.x (or previous, really?), that are not compatible.
Just imagine how many problems this could cause in a professional context with many people passing material each other for subsequent work on it.
@StevenJones01
(You can use faxes too.
)
I think that message is not enough, and be dangerous letting users do so.
It is not common that power users are so naive to use next version projects with previous versions, so I think I would not ever see that message no matter what. Furthermore I do not use Dorico at all, I have to say, except for some occasional use just to close immediately after. I just checked Dorico6 trial to see it’s the same of 5 about the quirkynesses.
This is not trolling, it is the hard truth.
Why I am I not surprised that your answer would be just like this?
It is extremely common on this forum, where we have people using all versions from at least D3 to D6 and scores are shared to help solve problems. It would be deeply unhelpful if the person with a problem could only be helped by someone using the same version.
It is also very useful that Pro users can run Dorico in SE and Elements mode if needed, and non-Pro users can open files created on Pro even if they exceed the technical limits of those versions.
(But clearly you are not a “power user” since you claim not be a user at all)
