Where Does Auto-Save Go

I need an auto-saved version of a file that was in the Windows Recycle Bin. In the Recycle Bin, I selected it and clicked Restore. I can’t find it. Where did it go?

I’m not sure how Windows handles that, but I’d look first where the came from.

From the manual:

Dorico Pro saves auto-saved projects in an AutoSave folder inside the application data folder for your user account

In general, Windows usually returns the restored file to its original folder — even if it has to recreate the path. So as @kasky1 said, check your preferences.

NOTE: I’m not sure, but I remember something about autosaved files being deleted when you exit Dorico. So don’t exit when you check your preferences or you’ll be back at the recycle bin!:exploding_head:

They’re not there according to the manual.

And they’re not there on my Mac.

I find auto save files here

/Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Steinberg/Dorico 6/AutoSave

Which is not the same as my project backup folder

This is correct. On Windows, it’s c:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Steinberg\Dorico 6\AutoSave

Note that you can also drag a file out of the Recycle bin to any folder you want, instead of using Restore.

I was incorrect. The location of Auto-save files is different than backup files. This just goes to show that we all learn something new or correct what we may have learned incorrectly fairly frequently. On a Mac the Auto-save files are stored at /Users/[username]/Library/Application Support/Steinberg/Dorico 6/Autosave.
