White Lines at bottom of mixer = Channels panned at outputs, no white lines = mono dead centre

Hi there,

I have run into an interesting situation…I’m not sure if this is just co-incidence or what I am doing wrong on Channel settings…

Cubase 15 Pro with most recent update. Tascam US-16x08 Audio Interface. MIDI is MIO XM.

I don’t have any MIDI Remote Controllers at all, other than my keyboards.

Using Synth V Pro, I have 8 channels for voices. Each voice = 1 track / channel.

In Synth V, all 8 voices are panned hard left or Hard Right. So, Tascam Outputs on odd numbered channels are all panned hard left. Tascam Outputs on even numbered channels are all panned hard right.

In the Mixer window there are 8 white lines at the bottom. However, only the Tascam Channel 1-6 have the white line. They all play back as expected with each output properly going to its proper panning assignment. The two Channel outputs for Output 7 & Output 8 don’t have a white line below it. On playback, those two channels are summed to centre for both. I would like to have Outputs 7 & 8 work like the first 6 channels with the white lines…

The Synth V Panning settings are all set to odd = left, even = Right. Also, if I mute a channel in the Synth V piano Roll window, it gets muted properly buit isn’t reflected in the Mixer Channel, so it is not echoed as far as displaying the Mute.

Output #8 has the number ‘1’ beside it. Not sure of the meaning of this…

White Lines bottom of mixer end at Channel Output 6. Those first 6 channels work properly. Channels 7 & 8 no white lines at bottom of mixer, not working as they should for sound output.

I have nothing connected or even listed as a MIDI Remote.

So my question is this…If the first 6 Output channels with the white lines are working properly, how can I have the white lines also added to Channels 7 & 8 Outputs, please.

I really am at a loss at this point, but in looking at previous posts about the white lines, a lot of it seems to be geared to either MIDI Remotes connected or else to Banks.

Would it help if I moved the first two MIDI Tracks (not the VST Tracks) to after the final output #8? (I will have to give it a try and see). (After trying, it didn’t make any difference)

I am beginning to think that it might be pointing to an issue with the Tascam Interface itself. I know their drivers have been subject to a lot of criticism, and they haven’t been updated for years…

The white lines are merely an indicator which channels can be controlled by Midi Remote at any given time. It is probably just a coincidence that the two problematic channels don’t have a white line indicator and not relevant to your issue.

As for the panned routing: you have three different stages in the signal flow. The synth plugin, the Cubase mixer and the Tascam audio interface. Can you have a look where in these three stages the signal of channel 7 is not on the left but in the center?

Thanks so much for your advice. I will double-check these later today. I know in the Plug-in they are panned properly. I believe the Tascam is set up for 8 individual outs, and I have tried changing the Panning on the Cubase Mixer, but it doesn’t seem to make any difference.

Again, I will double-check all three of these settings a little later today. I am still not sure what the ‘1’ indication beside the Channel 8 output in the Visibility Inspector means…lol

Well, this issue has been fixed…It ended up being 2 corresponding bad channels on my rackmount Line Mixer. I moved them to the next two corresponding channels and everything is working as it should. What were the chances? I had tried different cables, etc. but the Line Mixer had been very reliable…

If anyone has any ideas on the number ‘1’ next to the Channel 8 in the Track visibility screen, I would sure like to know!

The 1 is actually a 10 and shows the channel number Cubase has given it.

If you make the left zone a bit wider you should see all the channel numbers correctly.
