Thanks a lot for this valuable information!
Hi!
I’m using a MacBook Air (Intel) and a MacBook Pro M2, both wit 16GB ram.
What are your experiences?
I used it on stage (appr. 10x - no risk no fun) and had no issues. I use 8 to 12 Audio-Tracks, 3 VST-Instruments (Halion Sonic, The Grand, GrooveAgent)
What worked and what didn’t?
Mostly the “issues” happend are wrong using of tools (i am a “never read a manual person”).
A real pain is the lyrics-track. Writing the lyrics in the right position is not very comfortable. But the top of the pain is: Forget setting the correct BPM (standard 120bpm).
After correcting the bpm the lyrics had to be repositioned.
Writing the chordtrack manually is not very comfortable too. Doing this during playing the tracks ist a little bit sporty (i’m not a keyboard player). Without playing the song its timeconsuming.
How could VST Live improve your performance?
It gives me the ability to change my musicians just in time. Every instrument can be played from track or if the “human” musician is in the house it will be played live. So we had different guest-musicians (changing band members or from the visitors from the audience) they can join in.
Band-Tech had nothing to do during the show. All things controled by footswitches or pc-keyboard.
What are your tips & tricks?
One of the wired things i had to learn was the using of dropbox or nextcloud.
I store all VL-files in dropbox or nextcloud. So i have all changes on every computer at the same version.
But if you start VL there are a lot of new files VL is using (without saving or changing anything). And it needs its time to replicate after VL is closed. If this time is to short (depends on internet speed) you can get a lot off errors in dropbox/nextcloud or even VL.
If you give the system the needed time - everything works like expected. It is not a VL-Thing but can be annoying.
What do you control with VST Live?
Nearly everything. Light (LightKey), Music-Sheets, Playback, Mixer (M32), Kemper, Onsong and other midi-stuff if necessary.
What did you use before VST Live?
I use ableton Live 11. It is a real good product for live. But the reality is/was that i need a lot steps more to pack all control and music tracks into ableton. And it needs much more process power. Ableton - in my opinion - is not the best joyce for playing backing tracks.
