Why are folder tracks so ineffectual?

I have 5 takes of recorded drums. each take in its own folder. I would like to be able to press the S button to play all the tracks instead of selecting each individually every time. To listen to any take, I have to do the same. but the reverse works, if they are all soloed, then M on the folder mutes all. This is almost universal with drum tracks, I think. At least I haven’t found a project lately where this is not the case. But in other projects I have midi track folders that behave the same. I have seen posts to just create a new folder and move the tracks there, and what I did in the tracks named drums t5 and drums T5, but it made no difference.
This problem existed in previous version of Cubase, so why with all the updates and new versions is this still an issue?

It’s working fine here. Cubase 12.
I solo/mute the folder, and every track inside follows the same state.
The only case in which tracks are not following the folder’s state is if I mute the tracks beforehand individually.
But there is no reason to do so because the folder is doing it for me.

Same here and it makes sense to me: If I mute specific tracks within a folder on purpose then this selction of unmuted tracks is there for a reason. If I mute/solo the folder I want to keep that selection as is and do not want it to be overwritten.

Do you have real drums recorded on multiple channels? So I am study ing what had I played on audio drums because I am finding some parts I like better than what I played recently on the roland midi set. So each time I want to compare a drum take, I have to click 9 times on each track. This means that as I go back and forth, actions that would take 9 minutes take 81 minutes, more likely 10 x as long because of having to also open up the folders and close to check each. This is a MAJOR time waste.

That is why Comping was invented:

Yeah, why would you do it this way when you have the comping option? Makes it so much easier.
But if you still like it like this, just follow my recommendation not to mute the tracks beforehand. Leave everything active and mute/solo the folders.
Should work. Maybe someone on C14 version can confirm it.

Since I don’t understand what people are talking about -comping as a solution, maybe they didn’t understand what the problem was/is.

I recorded drum tracks years ago with mikes on an acoustic drum set. since I got the Roland VAD midi set and went to a project and played a new track. But I was less satisfied with my some parts of my new track and wanted to listen and compare sections of the song. So with 5 tracks that won’t solo by clicking the folder solo, I have to open and solo 9 tracks on each take.

So I worked my way through the song, mainly with one of the takes and in each measure of 119, I would compare and decide if I wanted to alter my recent version, and in many cases I did. So to hear a whole acoustic set take play, I would have to solo 9 tracks, and then to not hear it, while I played the midi track, I would have to mute ( which was one step as this works for the folder). Then at the next measure, I would have to solo each of the 9 tracks again to hear. I got through the whole song and deciding what I liked best for each part by about 11pm, and feel I much improved the drum track, using the best (to me) of both. I didn’t go through most of 4 other takes as it was too much trouble with such a tedious procedure.

I rarely muted any individual tracks on a take, except in some parts where I wanted to hear the cymbal better. Separation was not good on this home recording, with mikes picking up other drums.

So to hear only one track, 9 solos must be done, then to hear another that one needs to be muted. All must be muted to hear one track, and to unmute, 9 solos must be clicked. CANNOT quickly go back and forth between tracks!

Please read the manual excerpt @Reco29 posted to understand what people are suggesting to you:

But, if I’m reading right, in order to get to ‘comping’ his brand new takes alongside existing, @robirdman1 need’s to convert his old set of drum ‘takes’ (recorded on separate tracks per mic channel, and not into Lanes), that were recorded some years ago, into Lanes, first
Creating Lanes from Track Versions • Cubase Pro Help • Reader • Steinberg

Then, follow the above link about Assembling the Perfect Take, recording brand new takes as well, to get a ‘best of everything’ edition, using the Comp tool etc…

Yes indeed, comping is something different -not related to the solo/mute problem you are experiencing, is just a heads up so that next time (or this time if you decide to convert to lanes) will make things easier finding the perfect take.

Now, regarding the folders mute/solo issue:
Have you tried clearing first all solo/mute states on individual tracks and just solo/mute folders only?

I remember years ago using lanes to assemble a good take from multiple recordings to the same section of a project. I have projects like this where I tried different guitar recordings. But this is 5 takes, each with 9 tracks of separate drums (BD, SD, ST, MT, LT, HH, CB, Rov, Lov). I would have to merge each take to one track and then creat a lane, correct? And then I wouldn’t be able to adjust any drum balance individually. With lanes you only hear one at once or is that changed?

Since I wound up just reviewing one take almost exclusively, I did save time by instead of muting all in one step and then soloing in 9 steps, by routing to a group track and just lowering or raising its volume as I compared the the midi track.

Yes, you are right, that’s the way it works.

In your case:

  1. Please follow @almaelectronix’s advice and reset the solo/mute state of all lanes within a folder. Solo/Mute on the folder should work now.

  2. In case you want to audition drums only: Go To
Preferences > Editing > Project & Mixconsole > Enable Solo on Selected Track and associate this command with a key command of your choice.

If you solo something (works for folders, too) all other tracks are muted as long as you don’t have defeat solo activated of course.

There are other solutions as well but this one should do.

Good luck!
