Why are there multiple Profiles?

I thought I’d finally try the Profile feature.
I open the dialog box and the first thing I see is six(6) numbered “default” files.
Are they just empty and can I delete them or are they part of something I should take a look at first? If so, what is it?
And if they shouldn’t ought to be there what made them appear there anyway?
What can I do to avoid them being there?

Yes, you can delete them. They are created for example in case you trash your preferences.
