Why full score gives arbitrarily-different names page by page

Hello all,

I am trying to figure out why Dorico 6 sometimes displays:

Hns 1, 3

Hns 2, 4

and other times

Therefore, it alternates between different formats for no apparent reason. Any suggestions on what I may have done?

Take a look in Engraving Options > Staff Labels > Numbering.

These are the factory defaults. So Dorico will prefer to stack the numbers vertically but will stack them horizontally if the notes share a stem, as they do in the examples you gave. If you want them always vertical, change the second setting to “Ignore stem allocations”; if you want them always horizontal, change the first setting to “Stack horizontally”.

Thank you! I did not realize the “Stack vertically” text would override the other settings (such as the shared stems), or that they were mutually connected. That solved it!
