Hi - generally, I’ve been so happy with the lyric tool, but I’ve run into a mystery. Any thoughts as to why this doesn’t generate a word extension on “all”? And is there any way to force it to?
sometimes it is a sign for having different voices.
If you enable voice colours, do you see anything unusual?
Thanks, I thought of that – the lyric and the notes are all the same color.
After typing “all.”, did you press the space bar to advance the lyric through the rest of the note’s duration?
I hadn’t! Thanks, I didn’t realize that was necessary. All fixed.
Hi @agerle, good that it’s solved.
You could flag @Stu_M’s post as “solution”, so other forum users can take advantage of it:
Done!
This does not help me. I typed all of the words in using the space bar between the words, and still, words that are under a dotted half note (in 3/4), still do not have word extensions. Isn’t there a way to force word extensions and NOT have to use the text tool to draw a line and have to adjust every one of them?
snohomishfamilymusic, welcome to the forum.
If you are in Galley view, things might not look the way you would expect them. Galley view is mainly for inputting music. To have a look at the final layout, switch to Page View.
If you still don’t see the extension line, the word or syllable might be taking up the space of your dotted quarter note, so the extension line is not necessary.
I suspect you have a Full Score, where you expect all lyric extender lines to match visually. Can you show us a screenshot of your issue?
IF it is it a single syllable on a single dotted half note, then extension lines are not used.
An extension line shows that the syllable continues to the next note head.
If that’s not the issue, then please show a screenshot, or sample document.
Here is the screenshot showing an extension on a quarter note tied to an eighth in the S1 & S2 parts, but not on the dotted half in the alto:
And to be clear, all of the lyrics are entered with a space bar between each word and syllable.
Since the lyric doesn’t continue to the next note head, it would be strange to see an extender line. There’s no extender line after “birds,” in the next bar either.
Yes: No extension line for one syllable on one note.
You also have a rogue extension line on ‘them’ in bar 33 that needs removing. Double-click on the syllable and press space.
Thanks for the information. (Especially about the roque extension line). I don’t quite understand what is meant by " lyric doesn’t continue to the next note head." Are you saying it would only have an extension if it’s a tied note? What about whole notes in 4/4?
Doesn’t the lyric continue in the Alto from measure 24 to 25?
Unless a word is sung on two different notes (either pitch or rhythm) or is part of a tied note, there should not be a lyric extension. So in Alto, ms. 25 no lyric extension should happen. Same for S1 & S2 in ms. 28. As shown in your example is the way lyrics should be displayed in standard choral literature. (In ms. 27, due to the spacing the extension is not shown in s1 & s2, but would show if the spacing were wider).
An extension line joins two or more noteheads that are sung to the same syllable.
If there is only one syllable on that note, then there are no lines.
