Pretty frustrated. I’ve spent a couple of HOURS just trying to get Dorico installed. Can’t even remember everything I’ve tried to do, but the first issue is that starting the Download Assistant gives the error:
“Failed to update the following Components: Steinberg Install Assistant.”
OK, so I’ll follow the manual installation procedure- I have to download and run 5 different tools? OK…
Done… ran all installers, apparently at least two background apps included… still, when I run the Steinberg Download Assistant, every item in the list errors- for example:
“The Installation cannot be started:
Dorico 5.1.51 Application Installer
Please check the download directory specified for this product or download the product again.”
I’ve tried changing the location from the default (Downloads folder), but still get errors.
this is not looking good, and reminding me why I stopped even considering Steinberg software years ago. HELP, I really want to like Dorico.
Yes, the SDA and licensing app is all under the whole Steinberg umbrella, which makes it useful when you want to install other Steinberg products, but sometimes it does throw up some teething problems.
I’m sure that one of the Dorico team will be along to help soon.
Everyone seems to be wasting no time in moving over, so it’s going to be busy!
And I, on the other hand, have always used only SDA to install Dorico, and the only snag I’ve ever had is sometimes I have to log in on the website again in order to run it.
I just found this thread after reading your posts in the other one. To make things easier for all, try to keep your posts about a particular topic (e.g. installation) to a single thread.
It saves users replying in different threads but also make it easier when other users are searching for answers to the same issue.
I’ve tried both SDA and manual installs through the links - still no luck and a massive headache. I’m trying to install on my D: drive, which has the most space - my C: drive is reserved for OS and System stuff. The installer told me that it couldn’t install fonts that were already installed, and I literally had to delete the font files before the installer would move forward. I’m ready to junk the whole thing unless someone can tell me what is going on.
Welcome to the forum, @lloyd.rf, and I’m sorry to hear that you’ve had problems with the installation. I would recommend allowing everything to be installed to C:\ to start with. The sound content is really what takes up the space (I think the Dorico5 folder in C:\Program Files\Steinberg is less than 1GB). Install this in the default locations, then use Steinberg Library Manager to move the content to D:\.
As a professional software developer for 45 years, this leaves a very bad taste in my mouth. Not allowing installation to another drive? This has been a minimal requirement for at least the last 20 years if you wish to call yourself production grade software. An error message that tells about a missing component, but doesn’t say what it is? Referring you back to the download assistant, which failed originally and it is why I went to the manually installing components? Totally unacceptable. I have associates who are moving from Finale to Dorico - I am a Sibelius user that would like to sync up with them, so I am looking and cross-grading. My experience with the extreme difficulty even installing the simple version of the software tells me this is not gong to happen.
I’d agree that installing is a bit complex, though it does have benefits if you use other parts of the Steinberg world, like Cubase and other HALion libraries.
Most of the time it works fine, but when things do go wrong (which you’ll know from your experience will always happen on some systems, no matter what you do), it can be a bit opaque.
It should be said that the Steinberg installers aren’t developed by the Dorico team themselves, but they’ll certainly be happy to help you figure out what’s gone wrong here.
If I recall correctly, Finale also has (had) a multi-part installer to install Garritan’s Aria Player and sounds separately.
No idea why the Steinberg installer gives some folks genuine difficulty, but many do seem to install the software successfully without requesting help, and members of the Dorico team are clearly focused on helping those with difficulty.
In this case, it’s not particularly helpful to tell you what it is because it is installed by the main Dorico installer (as the message says), and you can’t in the normal run of things do anything about it except to run the Dorico installer again. If you wouldn’t mind doing Help > Create Diagnostic Report from within Dorico itself and attaching the resulting Dorico Diagnostics.zip file here, I can take a look and figure out what specific file is missing, and then provide you with that file.
