XML Issues (adding beats, not importing everything)

I created an XML 4.0 file in Finale and imported it into Dorico Pro 5. I’ve uploaded the files. About 1/3 of the way into the piece (meas 41) Dorico translated things into odd time signatures and added extra beats to measures. At that points the sax parts aren’t showing up either

I imported the XML file back into Finale and everything came through just fine. The XML file is attached.

The problem here is that in b.41 of the Tenor Sax 1 part, there is a tuplet which has been incorrectly encoded into the MusicXML. The A5 and G5 notes are both described in the MusicXML as being within a 16th-note triplet bracket, but they are also both described as eighth-note triplets. That doesn’t work - you can’t fit two eighth-note triplets into a 16th-note triplet. Dorico attempts to enlarge the bar to fit in the extra time that is required, but that causes many of the other notes in other parts to end up at odd positions - in the case of other notes that are themselves tuplets, some of these positions are so odd that they are “illegal” and Dorico can’t insert them.

Welcome to the forum, @ddunning. The problem is with the tuplets in tenor sax 1 in bar 41, and all instruments in bar 43. Bar 41 doesn’t add up as written, because those tuplets should be 3:2 16ths, not 8ths. As a result, that bar is one eighth longer than it should be.

I see that Richard has replied at the same time as me! I’ve attached a version of the project with those tuplet rhythms fixed up. I’ve also modified the First page template so that the arranger name is included, and I activated fixed casting off, on the Staves and Systems page of Layout Options, to ensure you get 8 bars per system as in your original Finale file.

Thank you so much!

Once again, thank you for the quick solution. How were you able to spot this? Did you use some kind of app that identifies errors?

These sorts of problems are almost always caused by how tuplets are encoded in a MusicXML file, particularly (though not in this case) if there are nested tuplets or tuplets in a multi-voice passage. If Dorico “gives up” importing one or more instruments at a specific spot in the score then looking at any immediately preceding tuplets is your best bet.
