5 silly quirks about Cubase that have annoyed you for years

Not being able to route a send back into itself. I understand the thinking behind why they did this but I’ve been working with audio for over 30 years and I know what I’m doing. Give me full control over the way I route a signal like I can on an analogue desk. Make it C Pro/Nuendo only if you’re worried about the feedback loop for new users.

For those wondering why you’d want to do this, you can get some really creative effects by sending the signal back through itself.

Oh, and for the love of god please make .bak files save into a dedicated folder not the root of the project!

Agreed! It seems that when you spend a day on a project, and then open the same project the next day, you have 15 or 20 .cpr files as backups (.bak) and one .csh file whatever that is. Clutter is a recording studio’s worst enemy besides unwanted echo and reflections !

Does this fix your issue?

Overall, I love Cubase, I really do, but here are some gripes, just because I can:

  1. Limited creativity sound design features, like instrument layering, FX chains .etc
  2. There are some pretty big gaps and low quality plugins in the stock Cubase plugins, there’s no good frequency shifter, the ring modulator is average at best, there’s no good resonant filter, the chorus aliases at extreme amounts .etc. There are some great stock plugins, but I really feel that I need to reach for 3rd party effects more in Cubase than a host like Ableton Live or Bitwig. (workaround - MeldaProduction free bundle + ValhallaDSP effects fill the gap nicely)
  3. The fade editor for audio clips is powerful but clunky, most times we just want to adjust the curve and need to literally draw the curve in a cumbersome editor which shows 2 windows (one for fade in and out).
  4. When soloing a track and adding a new send, the send is not soloed automatically (workaround - solo defeat)
  5. There’s no way to vertically zoom with the mouse wheel (workaround - AutoHotKey script)

Ultimately, Cubase has quirks and annoyances, but compared to other DAWs I’ve tried, it’s still incredibly well designed and offers a very rich set of editing tools for both audio and MIDI. My list for Ableton Live would be soooooo much longer for example. I know that so many amazing tracks are produced in Live, but when using it myself, I almost can’t understand how, haha :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Partially!

Doesn’t work for Event Sizing, but nice that it does for splitting… would just have to remember to split not event size which is not a big deal

This is a preference setting.
Preferences > Editing > Midi

Split MIDI Events

Splits MIDI events when you split a MIDI part in the Project window, and the split position intersects the MIDI events. This also creates new notes at the beginning of the second part.

ask from LoveGames he made a project logical editor preset for grilled cheese

Yep, we covered that above.

+1 !!!
Same here

Hi!

For my general needs (traditional multitrack recording and mixing) I think Cubase works quite well, but what really annoys me is the non-responsive short name fields for presets etc.

As soon as you you use a little bit longer name for a preset or whatever, you have to make extra mouse clicks just see the full name. And for the most part there is lots of space left for a responsive or predefined longer name field.

This applicable for (some examples):

  • VSTi preset names
  • Plugin preset names
  • Export Audio Mixdown - File Format preset and After Export preset
  • Preferences presets
  • Arranger Chain name field
  • Control Room - Audio Connection presets
    … and so on!

It could not be that difficult to adjust this, could it!?!

#4 !!! Yes, definitely one of the (many) inconsistencies/quirks that drives me mad! I have voted where possible for a rework of the inspector.

Some really good common sense suggestions here. I wish Cubase was smarter when dealing with inputs/outputs. I travel between 2 different studios with different audio interfaces and Cubase seems totally blind as to what ins/out are available. I was recently working with a Pro Tools user and he was aghast when he saw the way Cubase handles connections. Apparently Pro Tools will adapt to whatever audio interface it’s presented with. Yes, Cubase can save presets for each interface, but the setup is tedious and annoying.
I think VST Connections needs a serious overhaul.

Hello,

1 No range tool in Key Editor.
2 Audio Cut when doing almost anything
3 When at the bottom and selecting right click menu, the list starts from top slowly growing up instead of showing all the options at once.
4 Missing right click options for tracks like create bus, for selected tracks.
5 When looking for key commands constantly having to click to check the next one because return key exits the window!
