A BFD3 thread?

I ended up uninstalling the 3.4 version. I am not quite sure why there is a new and separate version. I was asked in the installation process if I wanted to import the preferences of the previous version. I clicked upon yes and waited for a few moments only to be told there was a problem and it could not import. I was in the position that I could use the “Crush” and BFD 3 but not all the many expansions that I have purchased. When I did a folder search 3.4 froze.

Strangely I have discovered that the new version works in Cubase 11 as long as you cancel the sharing of prefs. The Standalone does not work properly. Which is annoying as I had used this to sort out all my setting for all previous versions. So I am seeing how it goes.

Can you explain exactly what you did to get the plugin version working properly? We’re you able to access all content from BFD 1 and 2? I have not been able to get this to work for me.

I’m also interested in a solution. From what I gather so far:

  • When in standalone: BFD calls inmusic for authorization, and bfd 1 and 2 sounds are quarantined. Bfd 3 sounds and the free expansion (if redeemed) will work fine.

  • When in Cubase, the plug-in calls fxpansion, and bfd works as it should. Only the expansion (if redeemed) will not play. (Because it’s authorized at inmusic’s account)

If they want us to migrate properly, they should give us the sounds for bfd 1 and 2. (For the account at inmusic)

Well this is what I get.

In Standalone everything is listed but kits don’t load. This is because I have to decline the copy your settings from the previous version, which doesn’t work and crashes BFD.

In Cubase everything seems to work in tracks where I have installed a kit in BFD3. If I open a new track I have to lad a kit BFD sees, for instance a BFD core kit the I can load what I like including Crush. However, the issue seems to be the prefs that the new version can’t seem to import for the seamless loading of kits. There is also the issue of the broken standalone that will not work, presumably because of not being able to import the prefs.

I have not had an answer back from support.

I have uninstalled 3.4 for now. When I had it installed the plugin could not see BFD 1 kit pieces or kits. I have contacted InMusic support, but had no reply.

Can’t believe i’ve only just seen this thread, it’s actually why i bothered signing in to the new forum after so many months lol… the old one was so much better!

The inMusic thing is a bit of a mess it seems, i’m waiting to hear back from Sam re the situation with BFD1/2 content and the new version. It’s a bit of a kick in the gonads for those of us with those libraries.

As to how i use BFD3… i usually start with the Beat Designer plugin, as it’s easy to slightly delay or push beats forward with the ‘groove’ sliders, emulating the style of a real drummer, RL drummers tend to be early or late with each part of the kit as well as having a ‘power hand’, so i always think out the ‘sticking’ of a part, being an ex drummer myself. Helps to avoid ‘octopus’ parts then

Once i have the basic patterns done i transfer them into the cubase drum editor as i find the BFD3 one too small for my eyesight.

I often work in small increments on the drum programming as a song develops,. i’ll look at making fills pull or push, add velocity variation to help keep things sounding ‘real’.
Reverb wise i generally use the onboard ‘room mics’, but if i want something different i’ll use the UAD Ocean Way plugin in remic mode.

Very often i’ll print the drums last thing before i start to mix as i’ll most likely hear and think of things that i might want or need to change and i find it a good way to develop an interesting drum ‘performance’.

HTH someone!

That was why I started this thread. There is always a time, such as now, when it comes in handy owing to the lack of a real BFD Forum. I too am going to uninstall until inMusic gives more clarity.

And thanks for doing so!

The inMusic thing POTENTIALLY is REALLY good news, looking at the rest of their brand rosta and the fact they’ve employed the original dev team, could bode very well for the future!

Meanwhile though… the migration thing seems to be ill thought out, about as good as the Korg Collection migration  there could be licensing ‘issues’ with some of the kit pieces, the Deluxe expansion was discontinued for this reason iirc.
The loss of the original content is a bit much, i’m thinking what this ‘free’ expansion thing is about, it’s hardly a replacement for the 4 or 5 DVDs worth of library it looks like we’re losing.

That aside, i think in the right hands, BFD3 is still superb!! Sonically i think it’s still the best around, the others all sound too processed to some degree, groove agent being the worst in that respect, it’s like they’ve been processed in isolation so they might sound great on their own but are a pain when mixing… ymmv though of course.

As others have listed their expansions… when in Rome…

BFD2
BFD3
Deluxe
BOMB
Stanton Moore cymbals
Yamaha Custom Maple Absolute
Dunnett
Yamaha Oak
JEX
Zildjian Gen 16 Vol 1
JnF

If and when the issue is resolved then i’ll likely go for the Jazz Noire as it’s rather nice.

Having a lot of investment in BFD means that you want to see it developed properly.

However, I can’t now uninstall 3.4 as when I did the BFD 3.3 dll file has disappeared so I had to reinstall 3.4. Grrrr!

This seems like one of those times when procrastination comes to my rescue.

There is a thread over at KVR (are we allowed to post links to other forums here?), where a support member from fxpansion says they’re looking into a way to give us Eldorado (BFD1 Sounds) and London Sessions (BFD2 Sounds). I think that would fix the problem hopefully. The crashing of the standalone… we’ll have to wait for a patch.

But at the moment London Sessions is £99.99 and El Dorado isn’t even listed on the website. They know that we have migrated from FXPansion, so they should just give these two expansion packs to us.

Yes, that’s what is being said; That BFD 1 and 2 owners should be getting El Dorado and London Sessions when migrating, but it didn’t work out. We just need to wait it out.

I also registered at the new BFD forum to be kept informed better.

Indeed… Think I’m going to stick with 3.3.1.33 for a while, as it works as expected and I don’t feel a true need for the Air added effects.

Wise words indeed!
I think i’ll be doing the same here.

Will have to check this out, but that would be an acceptable solution imho.
I did email Sam yesterday to ask for clarification on the matter but i’ve heard nothing back yet, i’d imagine his inbox is rather busy at the moment lol

I have just received an automated reply from BFD3 support. With various FAQs related to various issues. However if people are still stuck to rely to the email with detailed descriptions which I will be doing. I will report back anything useful I find out.

Hi, I would like to warn everybody that as far as I can see , at the moment you can only use the new version 3.4 when you’re online. As soon as I’m offline (which is as a lot of others my deafult mode when producing music both the standalone version (doesn’t start at all or gives a failing license error) as the plugin (Cubase crashes seriously) won’t work. On the AVID forum some guys are experiencing the same) I filled in 2 support forms but no reply at all…)

Yes I have just discovered this. I am so damned cross.

I have just spent an hour uninstalling both versions and searching down every bit of BFD3 on the C drive before reinstalling 3.3 and I am pleased to say that BFD3.3 now works. I must say that I am harbouring dark thoughts about the idiots that thought it was a good idea to have BFD 3.4 only work with the computer online.
