A BFD3 thread?

Heck, I just looked and I’m still on 3.1.4

Actually, I upgraded from BFD2 to BFD3 recently (looking at the library folders dates, it was last 21st february) so it’s the BFD3 version that I got when downloading the whole thing.

And looking at this more closely (in my fxPansion account download space), the 3.3.1.33 version has been the last one before 3.4, released on 2020/04/14.

Does it work offline?
That was a shocker for me.

I hope this is an oversight, like the BFD1 and 2 content. It doesn’t add up to have a simple challenge/response system, write about how the company doesn’t believe in strict protection that gets in the way of the user etc etc, and then turn around and demand always online. It just doesn’t add up.

I feel they rushed the whole thing. It’s good that everything works as it should if we revert to 3.3 (and fxpansion’s license manager), but the whole point of a migration is to do it once, flawlessly, steadily, in an orderly fashion. Oh well. :man_shrugging:t3:

Ok, I was a bit worried after reading this thread. But I thought, no risk no fun  And what to say, all works fine. Migrated to inMusic, updated to 3.4, all works. Just the content location had to be set up again.
But after rescanning, all expansions and groove packs back and working. But this was already under fxpansion sometimes a mess, after installing a new lib. Also got my free expansion pack. At the end, only installed the BFD3 Core Library again. No idea if this was really necessary.
So standalone and plugin in Cubase ok. Also when blocking it with LS to connect to whatever. So it works also offline for me.

Good to know! I wish it had went so smoothly for all of us. But it’s only BFD3 and expansions you have, not BFD1 and 2?

Yes indeed, only BFD3 and expansions.

I’ve noticed when you try to send a support request from the InMusic support portal, regarding BFD3 issues, when you click submit, absolutely nothing happens . . . and the “choose a product” drop down menu has nothing in it. Not very welcoming, perhaps a sign of things to come ?

Bad new I am afraid. I had a reply from one of my emails to support.

My email went as follows:

Hi again

Before I reverted to bfd3.3 I have been doing a bit of experimentation and thinking about 3.4. There are two issues that might be useful to think about.

  1. The License Manager is the main issue as far as offline problems go as some of the content does not seem to be fully recognised and this might be why there are issues. Now it does not crash Cubase and instead BFD comes up with an unauthorised window and I am unable to access any of bfd3.4s features. Despite this the project i have been working on continues to play content that is not seen in the bfd 3.4 library. It is clear the many of us need more help to deal with these kind of issues that have not been addressed with FAQs.

  2. A suggestion that would be very useful for us users who are migrating would be to provide Kit and Preset files separately to obviate the need to download the data content which we already have. (It would be useful to me as some of these files have disappeared over the years.) This is especially an issue as 3.4 does not pick up presets or kits from 3.3. At the very least provide info as to how to manually move them into the correct 3.4 folders. I have been having an issue with some of the Kit Pieces content. In the library it is greyed out and I assumed it was not installed as there was a (0) beside Metal Snares. However, when I was in the Kit Mixer and went to replace the snare I was then able to replace it with one of the Metal snares.

The reply implied that the developers want to leave the online element of BFD3. Which would mean that we would be stuck online when working on projects using BFD. He said that he would show the developers my email to get the discussion going.

Here is my reply:

Thank you for your reply and I would like you to forward the email to the developers. I would also like you to tell them that I will not follow with the upgrade if my music computer has to remain on line. Like a lot of us on the Cubase Forum this is an absolute non negotiable sticking point. I don’t know or use any professional software that has this requirement. My computer is only on line to update or upgrade software. Who wants interruptions when you are in the middle of a take? I also don’t trust Windows defender to protect my computer from ransomware etc. and commercial anti-virus software is too intrusive to run when you are recording. I really can’t see what the Developers think they will gain from this approach. They certainly are not thinking about the end user. I feel that it is much too intrusive.

I have spent a lot of money on this software and would do so in the future, but not under those circumstances.

There it is. I think that anyone who feels as I do should email BFD3 support to protest about this idea.

How do we contact support please? I don’t think the support form gets through.

I intially sent mine from the support page here.

https://www.bfddrums.com/support/contact.html

That’s what I tried, but I couldn’t select a product under BFD Drums, so I don’t know if it went through.

I think you just leave it as it is. Which is what I did and I got a reply.

I’ve still had no reply from Sam to the email i sent last week, not holding out any hope so i’ve just sent them a fairly stiff email… hey that’s The English way (to quote The Floyd).
The whole having to be on-line thing is a cretinous idea and clearly financially motivated… plenty of people using it in conjunction with e kits, WHO on earth would trust an internet connection in a small venue in a small town with this?

The KVR forum seems to have more information than their FAQ pages too, which is rather concerning.

Have registered my displeasure at the situation also FWIW

It seems that the support agent I had an online chat with had misunderstood the situation:

“So I misunderstood in a meeting. This is totally abnormal behaviour for the license manager. It was supposed to require the computer to connect to the internet once every 30 days, but we are lobbying to even have that removed. So it looks like most likely what is going to happen, is it will return to the old way where the initial authorization, and any time you download an expansion and need to install it will be the only time you need to be online.”

So that is a good thought and I have to say a relief. I will wait for the dust to settle before I actually reinstall. To be fair the guy I was emailing was incredibly helpful and has been in contact immediately when I had a question. I feel more positive now.

Yes, yes, and… yes.

What an unneeded and self-inflicted mess.

Guys, anyone who needs their BFD1 and 2 sounds, join the forum over forum.bfddrums etc etc, and send Drew a personal message with your info.

I already got my serials for Eldorado and London Sessions and I’m downloading as I write.

Have to specify this. On the new BFD forum, someone mentioned, that he couldn’t launch BFD 3.4, when wifi turned off. Here is my answer to this

Ok, have to clarify this. I just blocked the attempts of BDF 3.4 to connect to somewhere with Little Snitch. I now tried to start it with Wifi off. And yes indeed, crashing. That’s crap, of course. I hope that it is not actually the intention of the developers that BFD only works when wifi is enabled. For me a no go.

P.S.
wants to connect to
auth.profile.inmusicbrands.com TCP-Port 443 (https)
internal.bfddrums.com TCP-Port 80 (http)

My issue entirely. Should this be the case I will migrate to Superior Drummer. However my contact in BFD support assures me this is not the intention, so we will see.
