A Previous Work But Now With NP 5.1.0-UPDATED

I reposted these files after Arne’s kind response regarding NP’s reverb. I’m using exclusively Noteperformer 5.1.0 here. This is entirely NP 5.1.0 ‘out-of-the-box’ sounds; I just applied the Noteperformer template and added some NP reverb. The mixes are straight out-of-the-box, too. I’m impressed. Dorico and NP do indeed make a wonderful pair :slightly_smiling_face: Thanks, Arne!

That does sound good! Did you add reverb or is that from NP 5.1?

The reverb is Steinberg’s RoomWorks SE. I really like the ‘Church’ reverb; you can adjust the amount, the instruments don’t sound far away. I especially like it with brass, It’s in Dorico. NP’s reverb is pretty good; but I generally prefer an ‘outside’ of NP reverb.

I noticed that NP’s reverb is muted here.

Although we didn’t put it in the update notes, you must use our reverb (at least some of it) to fully take advantage of our new features.

For example, our ray-tracing panning/positioning is largely eliminated by turning down the reverb since there will be no room reflections. Our algorithms for smoothly blending sounds also require our acoustics, and won’t apply if the reverb is turned off.

We would recommend applying reverb on top of our sound, or at least keep enough of it to preserve the sense of room.

Hi Arne,

So what value would you recommend if we want to apply an external reverb on top of NP’s reverb? Just adjust the dial on the top right corner of the mixer? Thank you!

Arne,
Thank you so much for letting me know this.
I will use your reverb. NP is terrific and I want to get the best from it. Thank you for what you are doing!

Hi Arne, can you explain how to do this? I’m very new to Dorico and don’t understand how to do what you are recommending.

Generally, we recommend using our software, as is.

Some users want a longer or shorter reverb tail, or add their own third-party effects to the sound, although it isn’t generally necessary, and that requires adding your own VST effects in Dorico. That is a complicated subject.

Impressive! These sound fantastic! Thanks.

Hi Arne,

Can you give us some more details on the reverb? E.g., is this tuned for a particular room size? Thanks!

Eric Heilner

Our target is ORTF stereo captured slightly above the conductor, in a large studio or medium hall.

This was always our desired perspective, also in previous versions. I just failed to produce natural-sounding early reflections, and had to compensate/cover that up with more reverb.

As always thanks for the prompt response. Does the positioning of the instruments matter? I’m doing a lot of chamber music these days and prefer to position the players differently than in a symphony.

The pan knob in NotePerformer moves the instrument from left to right over the stage, changing the reflection pattern accordingly.

If you want the instrument further back, you can increase the reverb slider.

That’s so cool. Have you given any thought to customizing the room size / shape?

Hi Arne - Apologies if this was asked and answered elsewhere. There is a “Separate Output” template that routes each instrument to a separate Dorico mixer channel. I haven’t tried this yet, but if I read the instructions correctly you need to turn off the NotePerformer reverb. But won’t this effect the sound since we won’t be getting any of those nice NotePerformer room reflections?

That template is no longer necessary. You can route each NP instrument to a separate channel in Note Performer itself.

So I guess my question to Wallander should be does this affect the “blend” of different instruments.
