[AGAIN] Preferences not being stored + Colors bug

Another thread on this topic.

The colors that you have set before are not restored correctly after a restart. Also the preferences preset you have saved will be changed.

And if you choose a color, close the window and open it again right after that, you will see different values.

Please, no new plugins, no new sounds, fix the abnormal bugs.

Yeah, I was just about to make the same post. There are a MASSIVE amount of features in this software but a huge amount of oversights as well. I agree that a company like this should spend more time and just bug and quality of life fixes. Otherwise it become harder to make fixes down the road.

I spent hours trying to fix their poor UI by creating my color scheme. Then I slowly observed that my settings were never properly saved. I had to give up.

Steinberg: Please hire a user interface designer and user experience specialist. Please listen to their suggestions. Please take quality of life updates seriously.

Steinberg has a great designer, and he is not not responsible for file functions, such as saving preferences.

If your prefs aren’t “properly” saving, there is something up that can be fixed. I say that because I observe on my system and from the forum, that preferences are saved.

Also, you might note that this topic is more than two years old, and has no replies but ours, so it doesn’t indicate a widespread problem.

Of course, if you just want to gripe, go for it. Troubleshooting always available though.

Bug off Steve if you have nothing useful to say.

I came here to “gripe” about a technical problem I am having. I didn’t know I’m not supposed to because this post is old. The video linked in the original post is the problem I am having. After I explained it on Facebook someone responded with, “I’m not going crazy!” because he wasn’t sure whether he was observing the same problem. Newsflash: he is.

Regarding your accolades regarding Steinberg’s “designer”, please tell me what you understand about UI/UX? Let’s start there. What do you understand about the topic? Or did you feel like you had something useful to say without understanding the topic?

I intentionally use the terms “user interface designer” “user experience specialist” for a few reasons. My hope is that people like you will look at my post and think, “Hm, what is UI/UX? Maybe I should look up the terms before I think I know what I’m talking about.”

  1. In the example below, if the user selects a green color of the UI, which is an option provided within the context of Steinberg’s User Experience, it breaks the UI of the left side functionality because you can no longer see the triangle buttons. Why? Because those buttons are also green by default. Within the subject of UI/UX, you should not design a system that allows the user’s customizations to “break” the usability. This is a problem. This exists throughout Cubase/Nuendo. I teach students at a university not to do this. In fact I use Cubase as a rich example of problems.

  2. In the following example, there are THREE different colors that each represent the “On state”. We have orange, blue, and turquoise. Steinberg’s dESignEr made the mistake of not clearly communicating the color coding system or meaning. Are these random colors? Do they convey meaning? What should I, the user, assume about the meaning of a blue “On” button vs a turquoise one? I watched a live Youtube video with one of Steinberg’s employees just so I could ask him the meaning of the colors. He didn’t know. This leads a few problems: If the Steinberg wants a color coding system, they will fail because they’re using random colors. If it is a color coding system, then they haven’t communicated clear enough patterns that make it intuitive nor clear enough documentation.

I spent a thorough amount of hours testing out my preferences over the span of many days. I confirm definitively that the preferences don’t properly save colors under certain conditions. Maybe it’s only on Windows, for example.

This is a UI/UX concern because it impacts the user interface which impacts usability. I have a strong impression there’s some UX specialist at Steinberg who insight is probably ignored. They probably know what needs to be done but they may lack influence. This is a common problem for engineer-heavy companies.

So STEVE, let’s talk about User Interface Design and User Experience since you’re interested in the topic. Tell me what you know about it.

Make sure you have something useful to say Steve.

Whatever. Cubase is not perfect, and certainly no one is claiming it to be. I have posted scores of FRs and bug reports, and helped users troubleshoot a lot over the years, and am always ready to do so.

Your views and manner of expressing them are your own, and you obviously have a right to have them, and to state them. Bonne continuation.

Exactly. Thanks Steve. If you’re able to find the UI/UX specialist at Steinberg, empower them and help raise their voice.
