Aligning notes according to time signature across a measure

Hello Dorico team

Another feature request:

The ability to align notes equally across measures according to the duration of each note/rest. For reference, in Finale, this automation was called “position notes according to Time Signature”. It wasn’t perfect (especially for durations of 16th/32nd notes) and usually required some manual nudging of individual notes. But was very helpful.

Obviously Dorico does a great job of laying out notation in a clean manner, but this particular use is not yet provided and would be super helpful

An instance of this use that is growing in popularity: when creating scrolling notation for video lessons or transcription videos.

Here is an example:

Thank you!

I think what you want is custom spacing set to 2.0 in Layout Options.

Thanks for the response Derrick!

This is definitely helpful. I was playing with the settings for minimum space for short notes and figured that 1 1/8 spaces would be best, along with a custom spacing ratio of 2 like you recommended. Here’s an example I came up with. It’s closer but not quite there yet.

As you can see beat 3 isn’t quite centered in the middle of the bar yet, I may need to play with the settings of how much space is allowed between the barline and beat 1, if possible. Any chance that you know where to find this?

There are limits to just how proportional Dorico can be in its notation. Here are some forum search results that might offer you some insights:

Is the third beat equidistant from the first beat of each measure? It seems so, which would suggest that the bar lines float into the empty space. I wonder what would happen if one filled the fourth beat of that first measure with 32nd notes.

I see what you mean here – beat 3 appears to be equally distanced from both beat 1s (front and behind). I was playing around with “minimum space” in Engraving Options < Spacing Gaps and figured out how to have things begin closer to the left barline when space is at a premium.

Maybe from here I can just nudge individual notes in Engraving Mode when it calls for it.

Thank you for your help!

As for the feature request, I don’t think it’s gonna happen.
