Hi, is it possible to input alternate chord changes yet? I’m on 5.1
thanks
Darren
Do you mean alternate chord diagrams? I.E. a different voicing for a chord?
Or do you mean putting a Csus2 in a piano staff where everyone else is just a C? (If so: enter the chord you want and rather than press Enter, press Opt/Alt+Enter
No I mean alternate chord symbols, sorry for the confusion. So, I main chord symbol, plus above it, an alternate chord symbol.
Oh ok. I’m not sure that this is possible but I’ve been wrong (many times) before.
I know it’s been requested for a long time.
Yes, @dazzjazz, though I unless I’ve missed it in the version histories, we still await its arrival.
Perhaps someone knows how you might be able to add the chord extensions (e.g. the “maj7”) into Default Text.
I believe @dan_kreider’s MusAnalysis font can be used to make alternate symbols pretty easily as staff text (if you’re okay with the look of the font relative to whatever you’re using for your main chord symbols).
Thanks everyone.
I wonder if alternate chords could be attached to a 0-line staff above whatever staff/staves have the main ones?
There’s been some recent thread action about 0-line staves. Starting at this entry in the middle of this thread might be helpful:
Anyone out there ever worked with chord symbols on 0-line staves?
I’m not sure how it all works but you might be able to be sneaky somehow with Capo chords somehow?
No. You have to enter them on another beat, in a place where it won’t affect the horizontal spacing, and then drag them. I’d really love to be able to arrow up or down to enter an additional chord sort of like you can with an additional lyric verse, but nothing yet. I have a “Chord Symbol Additional Text” Paragraph Style that matches my chord symbol Font Style, so sometimes I’ll just enter it as text.
Obviously this is really commonly found. If you flip though any of the “New Real Book” series maybe 20% of them use them at some point so it’s not like this is obscure at all.
I think the systemic barline would be an issue with that workaround, as that initial single line would connect the staff to the 0-line staff. I don’t think there’s a setting to get rid of that.
Hello, I also hope that the developer team at Dorico is perhaps already working on this long requested feature? – see also here https://forums.steinberg.net/t/alternate-chord-sequences-in-dorico-4/761105 (and other threads). Many of us Dorico users are writing professional leadsheets in jazz or pop styles where alternative chord symbols (as suggestions for reharmonizations) are very common, as found not only in the »New Realbook« series. A workaround with staff (or other) text is not adequate as for professional layouts we need to use chord fonts of our choice (like the ones from Scoring Express or even our own modified fonts). Why can’t there be an option for either a) using Capo Chords or b) writing alternative chord symbols into a second chord symbol line? Dorico always prides itself on offering a particularly large number of professional layout options compared to other software such as Sibelius. To be honest, however, the software is much less flexible than the competition in this respect. Many new features in version 5 such as »live stage»-playback are nice, but not really useful for professional users:: Dorico is primarily a music notation and engraving software and not a DAW replacement… Writing two different chord symbols as alternatives on the same rhythmical position, on the other hand, is a feature that many jazz and pop users really need all the time. It would therefore be great if the next major update had a solution for this. Please…
It’s been requested as far back as 2017, but obviously there hasn’t been any progress with these.
Flipping through one of the New Real Books, I’d guess they are used in about 25% of the selections, so yeah, certainly very common! It definitely would be nice to not have to deal with workarounds to use these!
Add my vote on that feature!
Add my vote too!
I need this feature badly
Dear Steinberg team, developers, Daniel ,
thank you so much for implementing this feature and many chord symbol improvements in Dorico 6! This is great news for all of us Jazz-Pop-leadsheet-writers, arrangers and composers! I like Dorico not only because of the superior software, but also for the real openness to always consider and often implement user suggestions! Keep up the good work!
