ARA Integration Between StaffPad and Cubase/Nuendo

Dear Steinberg Team,

I’d like to ask if it’s technically or practically feasible to see StaffPad integrated with Cubase or Nuendo via ARA (Audio Random Access) at some point in the future?

Such integration would open powerful workflow possibilities — enabling composers to seamlessly move between StaffPad’s expressive handwriting-based composition and Steinberg’s professional editing/production environments.

Looking at the StaffPad site I gather you likely won’t see this anytime soon for 2 main reasons. First StaffPad itself doesn’t seem to support ARA. They would need to do this first in order to enable ARA integration with other programs. Secondly when you use ARA to integrate programs like SpectralLayers or Melodyne into Cubase, those programs are always running side by side with Cubase on the same computer. It looks like StaffPad only runs on tablets (& maybe phones).

You should probably ask StaffPad to support ARA as the ball seems entirely in their court right now.

Good luck.

Thank you, Raino. I don’t think adding ARA support would require a huge effort. I’m also using StaffPad on my Win 11, and it works even better than on my iPad. I have an LG Gram 2-in-1 running win 11 home edition with an LG stylus pen, which is great for composition.

For a day I am trying to find a use case for your feature request. Since ARA is about modifying audio and StaffPad’s main feature seems to be entering midi information with a pen, I don’t understand what you want to achieve.

Yes… sounds like what’s wished for is something like StaffPad as a VST3 instrument plugin, that can be loaded inside a host (sync editing with its timeline/transport, etc..).

You made me think twice about this — great observation! ARA is indeed designed for audio manipulation, giving plugins direct access to audio clips and timeline data for pitch/time editing.! Let’s see what the developers say — maybe there’s an alternative approach for tighter workflow integration. Maybe they can come up with a better plugin protocol, say mARA that also support integration between DAWs and MIDI software. Thanks.

Interesting angle! A VST3 plugin would allow StaffPad to sync with the DAW’s transport and timeline, but I’m not sure it’s the best fit. I like to see what the Cubase Team say!

I wonder if the MIDI 2 spec adds support for stuff like this?
