Hi, I am not able to get VSTL to work with DMX. I have a Chauvet AN-2 and have checked the device with ShowBuddy, it is working on Universe 1, with the correct IP address showing.
Configuring: under DMX Setup there is no ArtNet option, simply a blue USB symbol.
Under connections I have added an output DMX: DMX ArtNet Out - I can find no other options for configuring IP address etc, I assume this is automatic?
I have tried both programming some fader moves on the appropriate channels, playing that back, and also set the input to DMX Mixer and activating the monitor function on the track, then moving DMX faders. Nothing.
It must be something simple though I’ve spent a good couple of hours scratching my head, changing cables etc, finally downloading a demo of Showbuddy and getting the lights to respond in a few minutes. What am I missing please?
I’m pretty sure the DMX setup is for USB devices only, hence the icon.
I think you need to add a DMX track and sets its input/output devices. If you turn track monitoring on then you should be able to see effects in real time. There’s no connection between the sliders and the AN2 unless you do this.
Another thought: If you are using more than one network adapter (e.g. wired for DMX and wireless for internet), or maybe even more than one network (i.e. 2+ network addresses) on the same network adapter, then it will not work. VSTL cannot currently be set to the network and expects a single topology, though it was rumoured that this would be facilitated.
Thanks - that’s very kind, but as VSTL is missing an ArtNet configure button in Mac OS, there’s probably little point I’m afraid. I spent a couple of hours trying to get it working, and 10 minutes in ShowBuddy, I was actually thinking that I had a faulty AN-2 or a faulty light, and was relieved to find that was not the case.
I know that!!! It works in another app, it does not work in VSTL, I’ve looked at every configuration that VSTL offers me including the routing in the Inspector…..
Again a big thanks! But in fact having spent a little time with Showbuddy I think it’s going to be far more useful and easier to program than the very limited DMX track in VSTL. Showbuddy allows me to set up scenes very quickly indeed and save them, I can then recall them via midi from VSTL. This is going to work very well for me. I just took delivery of a couple more lighting fixtures and added them in Showbuddy - the DMX track in VSTL is absolutely primitive in comparison (I know - it’s in development - give the devs a chance!) scrolling to find the right channel number, etc. Or even programming from the DMX mixer (if it worked of course!) is really not very efficient or flexible. No way to name different fixtures or settings (other than adding another DMX track I suppose) Far easier to just choose the patches from VSTL. If you haven’t tried the demo of Showbuddy I’d highly recommend it. You can create a visual representation of your stage fixtures etc, and adjust everything to taste then save a preset. All. my lights visible and controllable intuitively.
Most of us using DMX program the show up in other apps and then play back the DMX into VSTL over ArtNet and record it. Saves having to have another program running.
