Good morning all, I am very satisfied with the workflow I’ve come up with, where I use vintage preamp and console on all tracks in Dorico 5 prior to exporting separate tracks in 24 Bit for further mixing in Luna :
The project playbacks beautifully and I am able get a perfect tone and balance… but when I try to export audio, the export process freezes after about 1/4 to 1/3 and after clicking “cancel” Dorico is not responding anymore and I have to “force quit” it :
After running a battery of test it turns out that the problem occurs if I try to have more than a total of 13 plugins on the different tracks, muting plugins on the Output channel didn’t have any effect :
Thanks for the diagnostics. It contains only one crash file of the VSTAudioEngine, but it seems to me you have way more freeze conditions. What does the Activity Monitor say in that situation, is the VSTAudioEngine process in a “not responding” stage?
If it is not responding, please take a sample of the audio engine process from within Activity Monitor. Thanks
I just tried with the DORICOverture project and added arbitrary plug-ins , in total 15 instances, but it exported correctly, but they were all Steinberg plug-ins. Can you nail it more down to certain plug-ins? Is it only with UAD plug-ins?
Unfortunately the VSTAudioEngine disapears at the very moment of the crash, here is the diagnostic file after those last two attempts : Dorico Diagnostics.zip (2.5 MB)
The crash location in the program has nothing particular to do with plug-ins, so I’m wondering where the crashes come from. Are you sure it has to do with the UADs and not others. Could you please conduct more test by e.g. taking UADs out an putting in others. Also, e.g. take out the Youlean plug, that one can also disturb things.
Hi Andro, I have updated UAD software from 10.2;3 to 10.2.4 and I have removed all plugins from the Output channel (including Youlean).
Surprisingly, I got a crash with “only” 13 UAD plugs on tracks this time around !!
Answering your very first question, applying this processing in Dorico makes more sens for 3 reasons :
1_ This is the type of processing that normally takes place before hitting the tape in a classic recording situation. (the tape emulation being the very first processing received in Luna)
2_ This allows me to entirely avoid using the (limited and somewhat clumsy) Dorico mixer to fine-tune my levels, while adding a good bit of tube character to the sound.
3_ Doing so for an 8 instrument project uses up to 40% of my DSP capacity, so if I can get it done on the way out of Dorico, I am saving a huge amount of resources later in Luna !!
I’ve had the problem (crashes at shutdown) with PianoTeq (solved in last update) and still with Relab Development’s LX480 (the VST2 version does work flawlessly but is really less great, from an acoustic point of view). I’ve asked Relab Development’s support to try and get in touch with Moddart’s, because they might help (though I’m not sure about that). From a user point of view, it’s a little bit disappointing to have those problems appear with newer versions (supposed to work better than the previous onew) but I guess that’s just how software evolves.
I have the trial for UAD native plug-ins but I confess I didn’t have the time to experiment. I will probably drop this as I already have a lot on my plate…
Just switching from Logic to Dorico I had almost no experience with VST so far, from what I could gather from UA they have their UADx plugs wich are VST3 but run native only, and they are supposed to come up with a VST3 version of their DSP plugs… sometime before year’s end.
Meanwhile I will stick to this Dorico → Luna workflow wich sounds great and is quite convenient, I will have to export one track at time until this VST3 thing happens.
If I need to export a stereo track of the project for validation when I already have my plugin in place, I can record Dorico’s output in Logic or Luna, so that should work too.
Dorico 5 is truly a game changer and allows to wright and produce music faster and with greater musicality and sonic quality than anything else from my point of view… If we could only import a couple audio tracks instead of having to import movies when in need to wright along pre-existing audio material… this is much needed !!
Of course I understand your workflow. But if it is deterministically and reliably crashing it’s hardly practical. Which I why I suggested you could move the UAD plugin to Luna, in order to actually get the job done.
I have a gut feeling not many people use UAD Apollo hardware with Dorico. How do we know it’s validated to be hardware and driver compatible with Dorico? Steinberg team, any comment?
