Audio: Hitpoints -> Create -> Slices = Out of time

Hi,

Cubase 14.32
Windows 11

I have a guitar audio track, that I want to shuffle around. Performing the following;
1/ Select the guitar track
2/ In the inspector, select hitpoints, set the threshold and intensity to whatever (to give me the hitpoints I want)
3/ In the “CReate” group, click on “Slices”.
This has the effect of slicing up the guitar track audio so parts can be shuffled around BUT it also messes up the timing (IE the guitar is no longer in time with the drums).
Is there a workaround for this behaviour?

Thanks
Pauly

Why don’t you use the sampler to create slices from the guitar which you could then arrange / play

Hi Manike,
I’m not sure how to do that (Happy to get some tips :-)), however shouldn’t the slicing thing work without changing the timing?

Thanks
Pauly

When oyu create them, yes. As soon as you start to move them around, no. In fact, the initial idea of the slicing method was to make timing corrections (without using time stretching).

Hi Johnny,
Thats what I thought. Seems there’s an issue then. Bummer - It would be so handy if it worked!

Can you create screenshots “before” and “after” slicing is applied? Don’t forget we’d need to see the timeline ruler for orientation.

Thanks. It looks like the slices were quantised by you.
If I sclice an audio event the positions stay intact. Moving them around is another story. There is no feature in Cubase that allows to exchange two events with each other as far as I know.

I imagine it’s happening because the tempo of the event is different to your project tempo - if you change the tempo of the event in the pool or sample editor it shouldn’t happen

Hi Manlike, The tempo in this project varies so I cannot manually change the tempo for the guitar track.

Hi Johnny, I haven’t quantised it… Unless without knowing about it. How would I ensure I’m not quantising the slices?

You cant use the slice audio command and work in musical mode (which adapts the audio to your tempo) - if you manually sliced the guitar that would work

Really? Well that’s a feature that should be added to the wish list. We often record live music and the track temp remains unrelated.

Is your project tempo changing or is it just the tempo of your recorded material? - if it’s just the tempo of the recorded material - set its tempo to 120 or whatever the project tempo is and the slicing feature should work.

Hi again Manike.
I tried that about 1/2 hour ago but same result unfortunately. Thanks though.

I also just tried exporting the audio, creating a new project, and importing the tracks. Same result. It must be because the audio is not in time with the tempo of the project file. Anything that can be done?

It doesn’t officially need to be in time - just set to the same tempo with musical node turned on. The musical mode is turned on with the check box in the pool or in the editor

There is a shuffle mode in Cubase. Might be worth giving a try. (I’m not entirely sure if this is what you want)

I’ve seen the same thing here. I never tried ‘fixing’ it because I’m lazy.

So you have the clip open at the bottom panel. You have the hitpoints set correctly… and then you select all in the bottom panel. Then click regions’ (I think regions.. maybe events?) This might achieve the same thing for you.

Hi Kearley & Thanks for the confirmation. Unfortunately, regions doesnt split it up like slices. How frustrating! Anyone from Steinberg care to comment?
