I migrated from Finale where you could enter a batch of previously entered lyrics with hyphens boom, boom, boom. I see no reply to others who comment this is tedious. C’mon programmers. Don’t make us buy an upgrade to a feature that should be there. I am also told it is in Sibelius.
What I tend to do is:
- Paste my lyrics into a free hyphenator program e.g. Lyric Hyphenator | Juicio Brennan
- Copy the hyphen’d text
- Open the Lyrics Popover and then Paste the syllables one by one as you go through the melody (pressing Space wherever you want a melisma)
This is still tedious and doesn’t need to be.

Yes, it would be nice if you could assign a whole string of lyrics in one go; and I’m sure it’s on the list of things to do.
Most of the text I deal with involves melismas and repetitions of words; which are different in each staff: so preparing the text correctly for Click Assignment was not without tedium in Finale, either!
There are many features in Dorico 6 that are not in any other notation app: so, take your choice!
Correct, the complaining and pining for Finale is tedious and doesn’t need to be.
Many of us are former Finale users and are perfectly aware of the differences.
You’re trying to be helpful and my frustration is showing. Please forgive my hasty reply.
You’re right about my quick assumption, replying from my phone and I apologize to Dan. Yes, D seems feature rich. Re-typing still seems like a drag.
You can hold down Command V to Paste, and it will do each syllable in turn while you’re holding it down.
Yes, this is one of the few things I miss about Finale as well.
I remember someone posted a script for this many years ago. Script to write lyrics faster (Win Only)
That’s how I work, too:
Open the Lyrics Popover and then Paste the syllables boom, boom, boom
