Hi. I am getting a new tablet for Cubasis things and I was wondering if it should be an ipad or an android tablet. I haven’t had a tablet before. I was thinking of perhaps getting an ipad air 2024. I would like to get some suggestions or ideas what would be the ideal tablet for making music. An android thingy or an ipad. These ipad and Android tablets cost about a thousand euros here in Finland so I need to be pretty sure that I buy the right tablet. I have the samsung galaxy a54 phone now and it is otherwise fine but the screen is kind of small for midi editing and playing the internal keyboard. So I really would be grateful for some tips on buying the tablet
This might help: Cubasis for Android and Chrome OS - FAQ.
However, I could not get an answer other than “buy one and try it out”.
No question: if you want to produce on a tablet and have as close to a near desktop/professional environment, it’s an iPad and iOS without a doubt.
What do you want to know exactly? If you only plan on using Cubasis only then its not as important than if you plan on buying other plugins and AUv3
Hi @anttifey7
The performance of Cubasis for Android is strongly related to the device in use, whereas Cubasis runs fine from scratch on almost all current iPhone and/or iPad devices.
Plus, iOS and iPadOS offer more options compared to Android (e.g. you can use a wide range of 3rd party instruments and effects plug-ins in Cubasis via Audio Unit). In addition, Cubasis for iOS/iPadOS fully supports using class compliant audio devices, and latency is not an issue on that platform too.
Hope that helps,
Lars
Any recent iPad model is by far a safer pick than other tablets.
Thank you to all who commented. I now have to think if this is the right time for such a big purchase. I was maybe too early asking questions on the forum as I should be sure about the money issue first. I have made music but it’s quality has been not so good. I took a five years break in music making and I feel now that my abilities in composing suffered
Just buy one of these old iPads, iPad 10,2" (2021) 64 GB WiFi, it´s only 297€ in Finland
Hi. Thanks for the tip. I think I should buy something new which would have support. I did not know that iPads are so powerful compared Android. I need to try to think
The iPad is a computer - just as powerful as a desktop
The apple M1 iPad 64gb is under $400 usually and it’s pretty much the entry level to true power on the professional level.
Idk what country you are in but if you have a sale or deal site search for iPad m1 air or iPad m2 air
That’s the model to get to have desktop power for a decade
iPad m1 air (2022) or iPad m2 air (2023) -( $399)
Hi. Thanks for the info. I would like to buy an iPad air 2024 model with cellular with 256 gigabytes storage and 8 gigs minimum RAM, so that I don’t have to buy a new laptop so soon. Also I would like to be able to update the laptop for a long time so I think I cannot buy just an old ipad. Thanks to everybody for the info. Now I just need to think if I am willing to start making music seriously so that I don’t take another 5 years break from music making
Wow big leap man
If you want my honest opinion there’s no point in going “full top of the line”
An iPad m2 air will last you for nearly as long, if not just as long as the m4 but at half the price on sale
While we’re at on the subject if you care to know more please head over to forum.loopypro.com for all iOS music producer questions (iOw for non-Cubasis music production talk, like Audio Units plugins, workflow and tips)
Whatever the case is get
Cubasis 3 ($25)
HALion ($15)
Neo FM($10)
Waves Real tune if you do vocals
Waves plugin bundle ($10)
Basically you’ll be spending $50 for the DAW and what I think are essential IAP…but lmk if you have questions
Thanks for info again. Yes, I was planning on getting the new iPad air with 256 gigs storage. I hope 256 is enough as 512 is ofc more expensive. I also hope I am able to learn to use ipados a bit as I never used it before
Yeah 256 is enough for me, two or 3 times over …
Hi anttifey,
I have the 13” iPad Air 6 M2 with 256Gb, it is absolutely amazing in every way, the processor is so powerful, one thing you must be aware of, the battery runs down very quickly when using Cubasis and the many AUv3 plugins within it, but that’s only because of the screen size, if you keep it plugged in and set the battery charge to 80% max, then you won’t have any problems, just lots and lots of fun making music
Mike
Hi and thanks for the info. I am sorry to hear that the battery runs down very quickly when using cubasis. I am afraid that the battery dies for good if it is all the time plugged in. Why they didn’t put a good battery in the ipad that is the question.
I quite agree, I will test how fast the battery runs down later this evening when using Cubasis, I will post the results soon after.
Here is possibly a bit help. You could try these tips too.

I don’t believe it! I have been using my 13” Air all this time with the brightness set to 3/4, that equates to 40% battery use for 30 minutes Cubasis 3 use, I reduce the battery to 1/3, now I get the same 30 minutes but only using 5% battery, unbelievable.
Thanks for tips
Well, I am glad that the tips work. Did you try the other tips too? Maybe they could improve the battery life even more
Everything else is either turned off or not being used. I set the max battery charge to 80% in settings, apparently this prolongs battery life, this feature is not available on my iPad Air 4.
Thanks
