Can't select notes between two points using shift anymore?

This quick video explains what I’'m experiencing. Thanks for any help - not sure what I’m missing/what’s going on because I recall being able to do this previously:

Sorry D.D. Jackson, I can only say that this works perfectly here and in any version of Dorico: Shift to select all the notes in between, and Ctrl to select single notes. What happens if you select Ctrl+A? I hope at least this command works. Are you sure your Keyboard/Language is correct?

On a Mac, use Cmd-click.

I was only able to replicate what you demonstrate in the video if I was also holding down the opt/alt key while shift-clicking on the note at the end of the intended selection. I don’t know if that information will help, but it might be worth checking out Show Keyboard Viewer to see if there is a hardware problem (ie a sticking key).

Command A works fine for select all. Neither shift or shift-option works (same behavior as in my video example). Strange. At least I’ve confirmed that it’s SUPPOSED to work and I wasn’t crazy (since I’d been aware from Dorico for a few months).

Other suggestions:

if your keyboard has two shift keys, try it with the other one

use marquee selection (you might need to zoom in to ensure accuracy) - click slightly above and to the left of the first note and, while holding down the mouse button, drag over the selection until it is all selected

click on the first note, hold down the shift key and press right arrow until all the notes have been highlighted

quit and restart Dorico

restart the computer

check the keyboard language in Dorico Preferences > General

check the keyboard language in System Settings > Keyboard

Since it appears that it used to work (“Can’t select… using shift anymore”), something must have changed in your setup.

And I assume you’ve tried the obvious shutdown and restart?

Yes - I also ran Onyx, etc. And the problem also persists with other Dorico projects.

Other shift key: same problem
those other things work (marquee, shift right arrow) but I’d like to restore the regular shift functionality.
Have re-started everything multiple times and keyboard language settings are correct.

Have you tried using the shift-click selection method in other applications, such as Microsoft Word? If it misbehaves there as well, then it is possibly a system-wide setting rather than a Dorico-specific setting.

Shift-click works fine on the same computer in Microsoft Word so it seems Dorico-specific. I also tried re-installing Dorico twice but no dice. And the problem persists with any Dorico project. I’m stumped.

Does it happen with a newly-created Dorico project or only on pre-existing ones?

Is it possible to post one of those projects here? If necesssary, delete everything except a small section of notes, enough to experiment with.

One thing to try with one of the affected projects open:

Reset all the various Options (Engraving, Layout, Notation, Note Input, Playback) and Preferences to Factory, and anything else which you can find to reset back to Factory settings.
After doing each one, try out the shift-click selection to see if anything has changed. I doubt if it will, but when the obvious potential solutions have proved fruitless, anything is worth a try.

As per a suggestion I made earlier, have the Keyboard Viewer open at the same time as a Dorico project.

The Keyboard Viewer should be accessible from the Input menu in the menu bar. If it is not, or if you don’t see the Input menu, open System Settings, then click Keyboard in the sidebar (you may need to scroll down). Go to Text Input, click Edit, then turn on “Show Input menu in menu bar”. In the menu bar, the Input menu (which should have an icon indicating which language your keyboard is set to) should have an item “Show Keyboard Viewer”. Choose that and an onscreen keyboard will appear. When you press a key, it will highlight in the Keyboard Viewer.

Firstly, try it out in Finder. Press some keys, including the Shift key. Each key should highlight as you press it. Next try the same thing in Dorico. If necessary, resize your Dorico window so that the Keyboard Viewer window can be completely seen. Activate the Dorico window (click on it), and press various keys including the Shift key. As before, each key should highlight in Keyboard Viewer as you press it. Take note of whether or not the Shift key highlights. This information might come in handy if the Dorico development team needs to investigate the matter.

I’m also starting to think that one of your system “extensions” (I don’t know if that’s the correct term) might be interfering. The attached screenshot shows the icons on your menu bar. Do you know what they all are and what they do? Particularly the two which are circled in red. If it is possible to disable each one, one at a time, do so and then try the shift-click selection in Dorico. As this might require a logout after each change and maybe even a restart, the whole procedure could take quite some time. While in System Settings disabling each one of those, have a look to see if any of them have any settings which might affect the keyboard and mouse, especially in specific applications (exclude/include, for example).

One last thing to look at before I give up for a while is to Open System Settings > Accessibility > Motor > Keyboard and notice the status of Sticky Keys, Slow Keys and Accessibility Keyboard. If any have been turned on, try turning them off and see if that makes a difference. Although, because they are System-wide settings, they should affect all applications.

Thanks! Will try all of this tomorrow.

I doubt that any of the notation-y options dialogs will affect key commands.

They were all already off but thanks for the suggestion (those sticky keys settings, etc.).

A few updates: the problem does NOT occur with Dorico 4 - just with the latest Dorico 5.

Keyboard Viewer shows in all cases the shift key is being pressed normally and being held.

I’ve quit extraneous apps in the menu bar but no dice.

So it appears to be a problem specific to Dorico 5.1.7 I’m experiencing and nothing else. I’m still stumped.

Would you be able to do Help > Create Diagnostic Report and upload the file here?

I will plan to do that. For now - I switch back to Dorico 4 as a workaround. Thanks for all the suggestions - very strange bug.

Might be worth testing removing your user pref files from user/Library/Application Support/Steinberg/Dorico 5.

Rename the whole folder to “Dorico 5 OLD”, and then see if you can narrow it down from there.

I’d also check whether you have any key commands files in the system-wide /Library/Application Support/Steinberg/Dorico 5 folder - you shouldn’t do, but some other users have reported finding files there, and in 5.1.70 this can interfere with the ability to load the default key commands.
