Hi, I’d like to write a piece that includes carillon. There’s no preset instrument choice for it. I can use tubular bells, but I also need a bass clef staff for the feet. I added a staff under (and as part of) the tubular bells part. Notes on that staff appear, but they don’t play because they’re out of the range. Is there a way I can make them play or am I going about this wrong?
Search the web for a “carillon VST.”
Thanks Derrek,
I now have a file called “CarillondeGand.sfArk” How do I import it into Dorico?
I went to Libraries> Library Manager> but seems to work only with .dorico files. Any suggestions?
Dorico doesn’t deal with sounds directly. It just sends MIDI data to VSTs – separate plug-ins that play sound samples when they receive the MIDI. E.g. HALion, Kontakt, ARIA Player, SINE Player, Opus, etc.
A quick google shows you downloaded from this page.
sfArk is a sound format used with a particular software, Melody Machine, which is ancient and not in business anymore. None of the online ‘Sfark converters’ I could find will successfully process this file.
The same samples are available as a Hauptwerk instrument here, with WAV samples of each note.
If you have ARIA Player, I could create an instrument file for the audio files that would then work in Dorico. (I’m quite tempted to do that for myself!)
The first real Carillon VST I can find is this Carrilion library, which is about €50; but you’d need to get the Kontakt Player to play it, which involves creating a Native Instruments account and having a whole bunch of apps (similar to Dorico…) for managing libraries and your account. It’s also 7.8 Gb!
Though I guess if you’re serious about Carrilions, this is the one to get.
That’s the Carillon library I bought. I looked up the Kontakt Player site. Looks like yet another rabbit hole. I’m downloading it now and will get back to you. Thanks for the help!
As said, I’ll try to make an instrument for ARIA Player, which may be a lot simpler.
(I’ve gone down a rabbit hole of free samples on that site…!)
Turns out Native Instruments wants me to pay $15/mo and it’s still not clear that I can use it with Dorico, so I’m putting that on pause.
ARIA player?
Are you on Windows or Mac? ARIA Player is the VST host for Garritan instruments, used by Finale.
You can download it for free, if you don’t already have it. Give me a few days to see if I can make the instrument file for it.
I’m actually gaining ground here. I downloaded the free Native Instruments app. It should work with Carillon. But I still don’t know how to import Carillon into D. Once it’s in I should be able to find it in the instruments list?
So I opened Kontakt 8, and tried to load Carillon, but it was grayed out.
What you do is set Dorico’s instrument in Play mode with the VST (e.g. Kontakt), and then Dorico will send MIDI to the player, which will play your samples.
I’ve got a basic sample instrument from the Ghent audio files, working in Dorico using ARIA Player.
OMG you did it. Not only does it sound in Play Mode but it sounds in Write Mode as well. I added a keyboard track, put in some notes, then assigned Kontakt in Play Mode and they sound.
Now the only problem is that none of the other tracks play. I have notes in them. They’re not muted, yet they don’t sound when I press p
I have a midi controller hooked up (first time today) and it’s even sounding in Carillon. I have no idea how to use midi with D, but that’s for another day. My brain is mush.
I did a new doc. I put in fl and cello. They both sounded until I put in a keyboard staff and assigned Kontakt to it. Then the first two staves stopped sounding.
Nope I was wrong. All three staves are playing Carillon now. Yikes!
I have the flute playing flute again, but the cello is still playing carillon.
Might it be a setting in Play? Check the Routing, on the left you should see what each instrument is connected to.
Then cog for Settings and Edit (e) settings. My video will not show what you see, but might give you an idea where to look for your errant cello.
(Although you have probably checked all this?)
I’m stumped. I route the singer, flute, and cello into HALion Sonic. Each in its own midi channel. They sound, they play, but when I route the 4th channel to Kontakt 7 it overwrites the others. They just disappear.
In my video, clicking on each instrument, I see the Routing change between HALion and Kontakt. That’s what is happening to you also, right?
Can you attach some screenshots or video showing it changing?
