+1!
When writing leadsheets, one way around it is to create a text frame (in Engrave mode) and write the parenthesis in it and place it by the chord. Far from ideal, but…
Text frames aren’t copyable though so this gets really annoying in a hurry! Shift-X text is far from ideal, but at least you can alt-click it around if you have a bunch of these to do.
Fellow Doriconians, perhaps there is a “go narrow, go deep” update in the works that will incorporate this feature as well as the much anticipated (by some) capo functionality!
I’m brand new to Dorico and switched from Sibelius. I never would think of a missing feature like that. It should be easily doable. I’m running 3.5.12.1066. Is it in there somewhere now ? If yes, how to?
There’s not yet native support for parenthesized chord symbols, no.
ok, thank you for the enlightment !
(I really like the workflow with Dorico indeed!)
+1 new feature request for parenthesised Capo Chords for liturgical music publishers who insist on this feature in their published scores.
Bumping this up. Much-wanted feature.
Please don’t bump. The developers read every post, and surely have seen this request — which, BTW, is no guarantee it will be included in the next release — of which nobody knows the date yet, but probably isn’t to be expected until summer.
Just realized one more. There’s no way to turn off the Chord Symbol Region bar. Even if you deselect Highlight Chord Symbol Regions, you still are stuck with this bar at the top:
The only way I can figure out how to get rid of it for display is using the \ shortcut which only works while held down. It would be great to have a way not to have this cluttering up the score when proofreading, presenting over Zoom, etc.
I hope we finally get this feature in 2021. I just came here to find out how to do it…Going to go reach for the text tool for now. Cheers!
Yes, I definitely need alternative chords too.
To make them really usable, we need the ability to place them at different rhythmic positions to the standard chords, and to add notations to indicate when the alternatives should be played (e.g. “Solos:” “2nd time:”)
An approach similar to lyrics (which can be entered on multiple lines) would be great.
Also, parentheses should be able to enclose more than one chord (e.g. a two chord turnaround at the end of a jazz lead sheet.
David.
Let’s hope so. It’s pretty standard notation needed for jazz musicians. Was promised 3 years ago that it would be addressed at some point. Just parenthesised chords (with ability to have opening bracket at start of chord sequence with closing bracket at the end) would be a start.

A very-emphatic +1 to everything in the two posts above from @FredGUnn and the above post by @StephenGraham :
Hi! Just checking in to see how this is coming along! It would be great to see this feature in dorico soon!
Wait and see what Dorico 4 brings in early 2022.
Hurrah! Very pleased to read this and intrigued to see with what kind of sophistication this might have been implemented.
Hi, nice feature integrated now! Just checking to see if it’s already possible (in Elements) to parenthesize only part of a chord symbol. For instance A(maj7). Can’t seem to find that option yet.
(If not, it’s not a big problem, I can manually write it with shift-X. I only need it once or twice.)
