Condensing changes and divisi

I’ve got an SATB score with some sections that are divisi. Ideally, (using divisi changes) I would love to be able to switch between staff arrangements (automatically or manually), depending on the amount on counterpoint:

SA / TB (2 staves)
S 1 S2 / A1 A2 / T1 T2 / B1 B2 (4 staves, divisi shown using voices)
S1 / S2 / A1 / A2 / T1 / T2 / B1 / B2 (8 staves)

Can this be done using condensing changes? I tried, but didn’t see a way to set up condensing groups with divisi—only section players.

There’s an option in Layout Options > Players to condense divisi and adjacent players if this is what you are looking for:

Are you starting from a “Choir” instrument (that should give you the initial grand staff) or with two separate vocal instruments?

Is this close to what you’re looking for?

@johnkprice, perfect! Thank you so much.

I got there, in the end, once you showed me it’s possible.

The only thing that’s missing, is the divisi divide arrows (Gould, p. 468). I have “Show divide arrows” turned on engraving options. I created a separate post about this, though.

Here is another approach which doesn’t use condensing at all:

This approach has the advantage that the divide arrows appear when going from two to four or eight staves and back to two. However, the divide arrows do not automatically appear when going from four to eight staves and back. This approach requires manually changing the clefs for the tenors and using hidden codas to hide the courtesy clefs. It also requires manually adding sub-brackets when using more than one staff for each section of the choir.
