Contrabass flute not sounding below C4

That’s the long and short of it. Since half of the contrabass flute range lies below C4 and where one writes for it most of the time, it would be lovely to hear it in the playback. Thanks in advance for your help.

Which Sound Library are you using.

Maybe this discussion sheds some light.

HALion, I believe.

Yeah, I seem to only have HALion Sonic.

For the sake of clarity: HALion (Sonic) is the player for several libraries – Iconica Sketch, HALion Symphony Orchestra, Sonic Selection, and others.

However, there isn’t actually a Contrabass Flute sample instrument in any of the libraries that come with Dorico. Nor even a Bass Flute. The “GM 074 Flute” instrument in Sonic Selection has the complete range of the keyboard, but gets quite breathy, slow and unrealistic, the further you go down.

If you have the Garritan GPO5, then you’ll get a Bass Flute, at least.

Noteperformer also has a Bass Flute, but not a Contra.

Thanks, I’ll see what I can do. I used to be able to see these different libraries, but I seem to have forgotten how to find them.

Okay, I figured out how to load ARIA since I still have that floating around, and I’ve assigned sounds to everything (contra is now some midi calliope, but at least I can hear something), but it isn’t reading the dynamics. I will search for previous posts on the matter.

You’ll need to use an Expression Map that maps to the Garritan Calliope. There are Maps and playback templates GPO5 here:

Excellent. Thank you kindly!
